Few weeks ago I moved into my new apartment. Itís a small studio/loft style place on the third floor facing a busy street. I insured the place with the local agency but since I have a fairly expensive mountain bike I decided to get separate insurance for that. In order to do that you need to provide bikeís VIN that is usually engraved on itís frame. They check that number against policeís and/or manufacturerís database in case there is any previous incidents associated with the bike. The whole process takes few days so in the mean time I decided to keep my bike on my third floor patio. You can see it coming now canít you .
Few nights ago a perp scaled my building all the way up to my patio, than all the way down with the 50lb bike on his back. If you think thatís not impressive listen to this. He did all this while me and my girlfriend were in the apartment sleeping. Being as hot as it was we also had our patio door open and since I have a fairly small place my head was no more than five feet away from the bike when this happened. Now, I am a heavy sleeper but my gf in not. Itís safe to say she is thoroughly freaked out.
Here comes the funny part. I didnít actually notice that my bike was stolen. I guess I just wasnít looking. Neither did my girlfriend. That day I received a call at work from the police constable asking me if I was missing a mountain bike. The description she gave me fitted perfectly however I was in disbelief so I assumed it just may be a coincidence. I had to call my gf at home so she would check if the bike was still there. It wasnít. And this is how they recovered it.
A patrolling policemen spotted a suspicious character riding down the street on a full suspension mountain bike without any gear at 5:30 in the morning. Being that the perp didnít wear a helmet gave the policeman a reason to pull him over. After a brief investigation perp was apprehended and bike impounded. Police matched my name with bikeís VIN number and I got the call.
This kind of stuff never happens even the police told me that. Now we both have a nice little story to tell.
As some of you may know I also had my motorbike stolen few week ago as well. And it got recovered within days of the accident.
So Iím wondering is this the sign of good or bad luck?
