I saw this article in the Vancouver Sun the other day. This guy steals a semi trailer truck full of beer. Turns out the cops had it under surveillance and move in to bust him. He doesn't stop. The cops give chase. During the course of the chase the thief runs nine red lights, goes through a flagged construction zone and the chase ends when he crashes the truck. He then tries fleeing on foot and the cops eventually catch him. He is sentenced to 20 months (only 20 months?) in jail. (He was also sentenced to a four month concurrent term for a previous and separate theft of video cameras.) The thief then appeals his sentence. The appeal court determines that the trial judge erred and changes his sentence to 20 months to be served "in the community". WTF? Sure, lets not put this piece of shit thief in jail where he belongs. Instead, let's put him back in the community where chances are this scumbag is going to steal again.
Yet another example of why our justice system is a freakin' joke.
As an aside, there was another article on the same page in the newspaper about how a cop who used excessive force when aprehending a car thief was being charged with assault.
