Interest to know if you ever got into an accident with another vehicle and what you did versus what you wish you had done.
I was riding northbound over Cambie Street bridge last Thursday afternoon and a minivan ran me over while he was changing into my lane. His passenger side door smacked into my left side, hitting my mirror, bar-end and even my knee slider. I saw it moving over from the corner of my eye but had little time to react except to start moving away from the van (weirdly enough..I heard my horn went off but do not remember conciously trying to hit it). Because was in P1, I was able to veere over to P2 and kept my bike upright. Had I been in P2 or P3 I would have became a sign post or lamp standard decor.
After collecting my thought I quickly scanned my bike and myself for damages. Mirror was scuffed twisted around but not broken. Fairings okay (no contact). I decided that its not worth the hassles to stop the offending driver and proceeded to make my right turn and head for the ferry. When I got to the ferry terminal I had a quick chat with the other riders. One said that it also happened to him; except he stuck out his left foot and booted the car's door and left a huge dent in it. Others suggested that I should have stopped and got the offending driver's and any witnesses info. In hind sight maybe that would have been wise - in case the other driver makes a false claim. However, I am glad that I did a few things right...one was anticipating and another was to allow room for escape. The horn may have helped also. Regardless, I did make a note of the time it took place and the bus behind me - should I ever need proof or witnesses.
