I am considering applying for an international Co-op placement through IAESTE. Some of the job postings require a "working knowledge" of the local language, and apparently, there will be quite a few job postings from Spain and South America. I would like to know if any of you have learned a language that was quite similar to one you already knew. I took seven years of French Immersion, and although I've forgotten more than a few bits and pieces, is it fantasy to think that this will make learning Spanish a lot easier? How long would I be looking at, before I am able to ask for directions, order food, and maybe hit on some of the locals as the charming foreign guy?
