Hi there. I was wondering how much engines usually go for and how much it would cost to get it installed proffesionally? Would it still be street legal?
I'm a owner of a 1989 zx7. The thing is so damn heavy so I guess the best weight reduction would be to swap to a smaller engine... anyone know if this is possible? I don't even know where to begin with all this. Don't even know where to shop for engines. I want something below 600cc. Something cheap. I guess I'm looking for the "HONDA CIVIC" engine of all sport bikes.
Totally newbie to all this so sorry if I'm wasting time :P

Hate to say but it IS totaly backwards thinking. I am sure the rest of the bike is fairly heavy too, not just the motor. Engine swap: a decent used motor would probably run you anywhere from 400 to 800 dollars, youd probably need one with the harness and airbox, carbs and black boxes(ignition module ,etc) and a swap can easily cost you upwards 500 bucks if we're talking a shop that charges hourly rate of ~70 bucks/hour. Other words you'd spend AT LEAST half of what the bike is worth getting the swap done.
Not to mention you'd have a very hard time selling the bike once you realize you made it much less fun as your skill progresses.
My advice- you obviously bit off more than you can chew, so sell the 7 and buy something smaller, lighter and easier to handle.
If u r going to install a new engine, exchange it for the same type and size....u'll get ur money back out of it once u decide to sell it. Which I highly recommend, and get a smaller bike to get experience on. Older bikes are generallerily are heavy due to the age factor and frames were less likely to be aluminum. Some question still remain here...IE
1. Why are u changing motors...Can the original be rebuilt?
2. Do u have a class 6 yet?
3. What are ur plans with this bike..are u planning on learning on it?
Answer these questions....Continued.........
oh yes... also, as per above too!

what if your bike was originally a 1000cc, but now it has a 600cc enjine in it, has anyone delt with the insurace part of this swap? ie rates?

My advice is to clean up the bike and sell it for as much as you can get and then go for a smaller, lighter and newer machine.
Don't waste your money trying to make an older middleweight into something it is not.
you could shave a lot more weight off that bike ,than you would ever save off a new smaller motor ,,if you were to get an injected f4i motor and get it to work ,The money, time invested and making something like that work would be a huge deal iim sure .Im usually the first one who would say chop and a bike and do whatever ,but not this one .
lots of better ways to lighten it .
glass body ,shorten the subframe ,loose any un wanted or unneeded parts or pieces without making it dangerous or not street legal .You could loose a good 40 pounds without spending a ton of cash .Zx7s are heavy anyway ,,but not so heavy they need a lighter motor . just weigh your stock lights and tail section ,,bet thats 25 pounds right there
thanks every one. this is the best suggestion IMO.

Don't let it get you down!
You have a good solid first bike and by following the advice of people like Borderline you could make some really positive improvements.
Don't forget that your bike was the "latest and greatest" not too long ago.
Motorcycles are impulse purchases and there aren't many among us (myself included) who haven't fucked up making an impulse buy.
if i had owned your bike and 4-5gs in my pocket it wouldnt be an old shit kicked 89 anymore .Just to make the point that anything can be resurected and made to BE , and look cool .
dont give up on it yet .
thanks guys. after i take that stupid engine sprocket nut off i'll start cutting.
thats right. the nut is still not off!
