I am a UBC student doing my grad studies. I also drive a 2000 DRZ-00. Having a bike in Vancouver is great, so convenient. Easy to park, don't have to wait for the annoying bus (that's a different topic). Plus Cheap on gas
Anyways, I'm from Nova Scotia, and I have insurance with Nova Scotia because I'm a student and I'm in Vancouver temporarily. ICBC lets me to do that. However, I've been here for a year and half and by March, it is time to renew my insurance. (I hate doing that)
Unfortunately, my insurance company won't renew my policy because I've been out of NS too long and they say it is too much overhead for them to continue to insure me in Vancouver. Even thou, I never had a claim, I always paid my bill and have been driving for 9 years, etc, etc, etc, but they say they simply can't afford to insure me here. I understand, I can see why... this is Vancouver, it is a nice place BUT there are a lot of yahoos in this city with a driving license. (Last week, this guy cuts my off in his white van ... then gives me a dirty look. Haha, hey YAHOO, you have to STOP and check for oncoming traffic before you pull out. Maybe he didn't care, my DRZ and I would make a great hood ornament for his Cube Van.)
So anways, I call the insurance broker for ICBC to find out how much insurance is.
It's insane... I-N-S-A-N-E!!!! They claim with a 40% discount: $300 for basic coverage and $600 +fees +whatever, comes to approx $1100 for the year. HOLLY crap, you are joking right? I can't afford that. My student loan is hurting as it is just to pay rent. Of course that is pretty high too cause I live near my school.
School! Got to go to school. Unfortunately I need school. (SO the world tells me).
Anyways, are you guys in Vancouver nuts? I pay in $297/yr in NS for a $1million liability and $7000 reclaim value in case of theft. Granted I realize that this is not NS, I'm in BC now: more people, more accidents, more theft, even more YAHOOs. (Do you Yahoo?) But the difference in insurance price from $297/yr to $1100/yr is a 370% increase! That is completely crazy.
SO what to do, no more motorbike??? Nooooooo! I love my motorbike. Not fair I can't drive it anymore be there has been too many accidents, while others like to steal. Or maybe it is my fault, maybe I should of checked insurrance prices in BC before comming here for school. Let's see education or motorbike... Come on... nothing beats snapping the throttle on my bike.
Insurance prices here are so high, how does the driving public accept that? Yet again, high price for everything does seems to be the norm around Vancouver. I pay over a thousand dollars in insurance... BIG DEAL? Mmm For a bike! Wow. What to say? I know I have been complaining/ranting and I'm sure some of you might say that is cheap. Well maybe, mmm actually I don't know... It is expensive, granted, I have been living here for a while now and I know Vancouver is super expensive.... In this town, you even are supposed to pay for parking when you go to the Stanely park. A PARK!!!! If you are in a residence area... that's 30/yr to park your vehicle on the STREET. Haha, I tell that to people back in NS and they laugh.
Anyways, I've been reading some posts in this forum about insurance. (Awesome forum by the way) The company called Megson-Fitzpatrick (MF) keeps coming up. So is it a better option to get basic from ICBC and theft from MF? Theft in Vancouver is about $600 for the coverage. WOW. I guess a lot of bikes get stolen.
Anyways, I do like Vancouver and I just want to drive my bike and finish my school. Any tips on what to do for insurance? I think I don't have a choice anymore... it is time to switch my insurance to be in BC. Any suggestions on what my options are to keep my insurance affordable?
