North Vancouver RCMP plan to muffle vehicles
NORTH VANCOUVER (BC Newspaper Group) — Hotrodders and modified muffler kings watch out.
The North Vancouver RCMP are armed and ready with new noise meters to muffle aurally offensive vehicles.
Under the Motor Vehicle Act, drivers found in violation can be fined $109 for having an "inadequate muffler" and be required to have the problem fixed, usually within two weeks.
The maximum allowed decibel levels for vehicles is 83 for cars, 93 for heavy duty diesel trucks and 91 for motorcycles.
The RCMP's Harley Davidson Electro-Glide Road King bikes register at 83 decibels.
Although many noisy vehicles tend to be two-wheeled, the police will not specifically target motorcycles, North Van RCMP Const. John MacAdam said.
"There are just as many offenders with cars."
