First, let me admit that this accident was 100% rider error.
I was checking out the Port Alice road (DH12 in the Destination Highways book). I did the road slowly on the way in checking for gravel, decreasing radius corners ect. On the way out I picked up the pace, I remember coming into a corner thinking, "after this one I have to slow down for the gravel in the next one."
Obviously I screwed up because a witness said I came into the turn, the bike slid in the gravel (which I thought was in the next corner), then threw me into the air and started to tumble end for end down the bank. I ended up at the bottom of the rock covered bank about 40' from the bike.

I was wearing a one peice leather suit (which they cut off me), Knox back protector, good armored boots and gloves as well as the helmet shown in the pic.
There is no question that the gear saved me from serious injury. ( I did break a bone in my left hand, concussion, memory loss (short term I hope), various cuts and many bruises.) Check out the pic of the helmet.
I will not be buying another sport bike for the street. I shudder to think of what I would have put my family through had I not been so fortunate. It is obvious that I don't have the self control needed to ride a sport bike in a safe manner on public roads. A track only bike next year and a Harley (always wanted a Road King) for the street to replace the ZX-9R.
So..... every one ride safe and get the gear, if you already have it, wear it!

Have fun and ride safe!
