Problems shifting into 1st
I seem to be having an intermittent probelm with my bike when I am shifting down to 1st from higher gears. When coming to a stop, I'll down shift one or 2 gears and then just pull in the clutch and shift into 1st. I always do a "double step" to make sure the bike is in first. On a ride today, I noticed that the bike stayed in 2nd and didn't go down to first. Bad news trying to get going at a light. All indications told me that the bike was in 1st.
Anybody know what the problem might be or how I might fix it?
the bike is a '86 FZ 600.
So, it won't go any lower than 2nd? What about neutral?
I know that on some older bikes won't always go into first from neutral. I am not sure exactly what causes it, (maybe a couple gears' teeth aren't quite lined up?) but i noticed it on a couple of the bikes at the Action School a few years ago and also with my old bike. Try letting the clutch out just almost to the friction zone as you're trying to shift down and see if that helps.
Wow.... that was quick!
The bike will go into 1st, but I am not always 100% certain that it is when coming down from higher gears. Neutral is no problem. I'll give your recommendation a shot when riding around.
