I bought my '03 RR from a friend last year(around May '04...he bought it new early spring of '03). The bike was immaculate with about 2700 km and 2-inch chicken strips when I took over ownership.
Last September '04, I filled up gas at a Chevron and it would not start afterwards. I push-started it and it ran fine till when my insurance ran out in early October and I put the bike in winter storage.
I bought a cheap Canadian Tire trickle charger in November '04 to maintain the battery. I'm pretty sure that the charger did not harm the battery as I was also maintaining my friend's ZX6R battery throughout the winter months. His bike runs and starts fine without any problem.
After I took it out of winter storage 2 months ago, the first couple times riding I had no problem starting it. About a month ago, I stalled at a light and it would not start. I push-started it and it ran fine. Got home and parked the bike. Over the next couple weeks, I had to constantly charge the battery before going on a ride...and I felt as though if I stalled, it would not start up on its own again...I would have to push-start.
Anyways, the past couple days, I took off my fairings(my first time) to install the Gregg's flushmounts...and I put the battery on the charger for about 24 hours. I finished the install, put all the fairings back on(what a bitch for first-timers...had to do it a couple times just to make the fairings fit perfectly...the first time it was all crooked...lol).
This afternoon after completing the flushmount install, I decided to go for a ride with my friend. His Kawi started fine. I put in my key and hit the starter...nothing...kicked maybe once or twice and then just a ticking sound. The instrument panel and headlight come on, but they flicker(badly enough that an epileptic would not want to stare into my headlight)...but that's about it...nothing else. The bike has no problem turning over and runs fine(no light-flicker when the engine is running) when I push-start it...just won't when I try to start it on its own.
So, what do you guys think? Dead battery or shot charging system?
Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Oh yeah, late last summer I installed a set of HID lights if that makes any difference.
