Alright so I had a pretty cool ride out to Calgary and back this weekend so I thought I'd post up what happened.
Left North Van at 6 from my appartment to fill up with gas for the way out of town. Pushed it 4 blocks up Main st. to the chevron because I forgot to check the level the day before and sure enough ran out of gas just about immeditately after leaving my appartment. So much for all the goddam planning I had done!!!
Fuck!!! Good one Geoff. So after filling up, getting a coffee and taking off my jacket for a bit because it was pretty humid and I sweat a lot pushing that friggin' bike up the road, I hit it out.
Nice morning, good weather, ended up being a little more chilly than I thought. Not too bad though so I just kept my cool max shirt on all day.
Gassed up in hope, up 5, ate a quick breakfast in merritt and gassed up again because i was paranoid.
Gassed up again in kamloops. 10 am.
Rode to Salmon Arm, stopped for a red bull and gassed up. Hit traffic some.
Just after Salmon arm there was about 6 cars on the road just stopped. Looked like someone was turning left into a picnic area so I scooted up the wide paved shoulder, nope, noone turning left, there was a BOAT in the middle of the road. Someone in a big truck stopped with 4 ways on and some guys from a few cars jumped out and pushed the 17' speed boat off the road. Diddn't belong to anyone at the scene. I left. 1.5 km's up the road, sure enough, there is a winnebago with a boat trailer. No boat. A few people standing around wondering how far back they had lost their boat. I slowed down just enough to yell, "it's about a click back". Kept going thinking "i will never follow someone with a boat ever again. Not for a second without leaving about a km between me and them. well.......
paranoid. gassed up in rogers pass.
Gassed up in Golden. Talked to a cool guy with an old yamaha cruiser with a sheepskin seat. He reccomended that I get one too.
Rode through banff, got the full banff experience. Saw a bear. Then saw some Elk.
Stopped to gas in Canmore. Got to Calgary about 7pm van time, (8pm calgary time) 13 hours, got lost
finding my girlfriends cousin's on the way,
but made it. Not even a sore butt. sore knees, numb right thumb, probably from the way my arm sits on the bar from my elbow surgery and pinched a nerve.
Had a good weekend, had a family reunion on sat, ate a full pig, and a calgary cow, damn good beef.
Left calgary 6 am calgary time monday morning. (with a full tank already)
Rode through calgary on my way out, saw the olympic park. Rode just out of calgary and had to slow down MAJOR for a bit. The cross winds were SOOO strong. Got scary a couple times and was glad to hit some foot hills.
Topped up in canmore. Coffee.
Hit Golden, rode the awesome twisties with noone in front of me, 2nd gear screaming away, those pilot powers are scrubbed in now and RULE.
No knee touching but lots of hangin' off. Nothing too crazy. Sooo fun.
Ate at mick dicks after filling up in golden.
Rode out through rogers pass and stopped to fill up just to see how much it would cost. 4.38.
No traffic and lots of throttle.
Rode to salmon arm. Was followed most of the way by a custom painted dodge truck that I left in the dust between cars.
Gassed in salmon arm. Talked to a guy training for the Iron man competition in penticton. It's good karma when random people you meet wish you a safe ride after you wish them luck on something too.
Rode to kamloops. A guy on a chopper decked ou in leather caught up to me. I was riding faster than him but he was happy to use me as a radar detector.
Gassed up in Merritt. confident on gas consumption by now. 200 km's is pushing it on my tank but I did 196 and it turned out ok. I try to gas up at 160 now.
Went over to chat with some guys riding harley-goldwing type bikes, one guy i held the door open for and he thanked me, but those dudes did not like me at all. Tried to start up a conversation, got a mumbled response, Felt like dumb and dumber, "big gulps eh guys?"
After that went back over to my bike, finished my red bull. Noticed lots more harleys pulling in. One big guy said something like "that kid crotch rocket.." and looked like he pointed right at me. Felt really scared. Put my helmet on and rode out calmly but quickly with my tail between my legs.
Rode down the rest of the Coq. Shitty ride, lots of traffic and pretty windy. Two speed traps. Missed me suckas. Now that I think about it must be some of that karma being used.
That's about it, home by 5:30. Fun ass street bike riding. Sorry if it's so long but if you read between the lines the twisties are good near golden if you get no traffic and watch out for the cross winds just out of calgary. The Coq is fucking fast first thing in the morning on a work day.
