    preload and dampening

When I adjust my fork preload the dampening srew turns with it. Does this mean that I have to turn the dampening screw back the same number of turns as I adjusted the preload scew to get dampening back to its original setting?

no just leave it.. one adjustment at a time, it won't affect it when you turn your preload

No, the damping stays the same. You're OK.
A backyard mechanic without a service manual is just like a hooker without a lamp pole.... they are both in the dark.
