Lately I have been thinking about selling my R1 and buying a dirt bike/dual sport. I would like to have both but don't know if I could swing the costs of owning two bikes. I live on Van Is. and find the road riding limited. You can only go to Gold River so many times.
I did three trips off the island this year, one two day and two three day trips. These were great and the kind of trip I enjoy the most( I camped on all three) But ferry costs add to the cost of these trips plus the hassel of BC ferries.
I have always enjoyed the outdoors and thought that riding the back roads on the island would open a lot of new possibilities in the biking world. I know I would not enjoy riding a dirt bike on pavement one bit and only do it to get to dirt or get into gas stations etc. I could even combine it with camping trips etc. There are a lot of dirt roads on the island.
So far I have been thinking about a Honda XR650R (with baja kit) or KTM 525 EXC also made street legal. I don't want to make a big mistake selling my R1 as I really do love riding it. ps. I am over 50 and would do mostly old logging roads etc. and maybe some easier single track etc. No jumping hard core stuff. Maybe truck it to the mainland once a year and explore a bit, but make a vacation of it and bring my wife. I had a couple of dirt bikes back in my 20's for a limited time.
Any idea's, comments or suggestions about doing it or my bike choise etc I would be thankfull for. I have a few months to think about my decision. Cheers RoscoeP
