No, I'm not a trucker!
I'm intrested in a CB radio to funk around with in my cage. I know they range from Cheap to not so cheap..
Know of any good models that don't cost an arm and a leg that will be fun to play with?
What should I know about these. I know they only go about 5 miles. used mostly on the highway... 5 minute rule. blah blah blah, I've done some reading!
A Used one would be nice. Know anyone selling one?
I got one from ebay for 5 bucks. Hand held, with a cig adapter. I've never managed to hear anyone though, mind you only tried for a couple of minutes.
The reason I got it, is because bill said that truckers use it to notify each other of cop traps. Is that why you're getting one?
Ever since I was a little tyke (sp) I liked them... I know, Weird...
the reason I want a cheap one is because I might not like them!.. apparently the antenna is huge with a CB. Maybe thats why you didn't get that great of reception?
I'd like one of the in dash box types.
I think a pawn shops would be a rip off.. ebay has some good deals, but my account is all messed up, made it with my moms email address and her cc a while back, so I changed all the info, but when I went to change the email address it says my address is already in use, so it can't be changed.. bah!
So I want one to play aorund with. I guess the one thing you don't want to do is be an asshole on it!.
A fun site I found.
Thanks for your reply
some friends and me were pretty big into it years ago. we could use skips to talk halfway around the world. we could skip to each other mobile for 30 miles or more easy. the president hr 2510 is a great unit to be picked up. lots of hacks for it and the 2600.
ssb, fm, split xmit/receive, cw, higher wattage outputs.. well worth it. i got mine for $250 years and years ago. probably tons cheaper now.
get yourself a good antenna. don't cheap out on that.
Hmm, if you wanna play around with it, might as well pick up a ham license (that's what i"m considering doing, just don't know where) and go for something a little more funky than a plain CB. Jonesboy showed me his setup - iirc it can scan both CB & FRS frequencies as well as cop band and a bunch of other things. That's cool.
Except I have no idea how to get a ham license and how much the equipment costs.
With a CB if you cant see him you cant hear him, get a VHF radio, you get 30 miles range easy, and you can scan police, fire, lad1, lad2 ect ect or any other frequencies too.
Do a search for Vancouver Ham Radio clubs, contact some of those guys they will know who does the testing out there.
You can buy one without a licence, and use it, and probably never have a problem, but its just like riding without a licence i guess.
Hey Miteorite, to get your Amateur licence go to your nearest Industry Canada Office which will be in Surrey for the Lower Mainland. It's at the Gateway skytrain station in Whalley.

Industry Canada has a software program that simulates the multiple choice test that you'll be administered. You can download it here.
