Last year in Aug my friend and I decided 2 go 4 a little midnite ride like usual. It was the nite B 4 he would attempt his novice riding test and he wanted 2 go 4 a short ride just 2 brush up on his skills.
We started riding around on our basic roads... Down Kingsway, on2 Boundary... Then we figured we try something different and went up past SFU and on2 Barnett HWY in2 Port Moody. The ride there was fine. We went in2 Port Moody and turned around back on Barnett HWY... Except that as we were travelling home on Barnett I noticed that my bike felt a bit strange... Like it was running out of gas so I just switched on the reserve... A few seconds later the revs started dropping and when I pulled over 2 the side of the HWY the oil temp was entering the red zone. I shut off the bike and we sat there at the side of the road at 1:30am... Trying 2 figure out what 2 do since the bike wouldn't start.
Now, we're both not mechanics and we just figure "Hey... Maybe it's just low on oil!". So my friend hops on his bike and rides back in2 Port Moody looking 4 a 24hr gas station that might happen 2 carry some motorcycle oil. He comes back only 2 tell me that every place he visited was only carrying 2-stroke oil... No luck there. BUT there was a Pacific Yamaha just down the road in Port Moody. Damn... Looks like my only hope was 2 push the bike ALL the way back in2 Port Moody and wait until morning when the shop would open.
Let's just say that pushing a 300lb motorcycle for over 10km at 2:00am isn't my idea of fun. I asked my friend 2 just go home but... What a great guy... He got off his bike and pushed his bike right next 2 mine. Even tho he could've just ridden he went thru the same torture that I did.
2 hours later... We arrive at Pacific Yamaha in Port Moody... It's 4:00am so we try 2 stay awake talking but no use... We fall asleep. It's not comfortable falling asleep sitting on a sportbike in that crouched position w/ UR head on the gas tank.
At about 8:00am we're awoken by a guy in a truck that's also waiting 4 Pacific Yamaha 2 open. What a coincidence... He just happens 2 have some 4-stroke oil 4 motorcycles! We put the oil in and... VOILA!!! The bike starts up again.
My friend and I take off. I'm trying 2 go easy on the bike just in case something happens and just as we're about 2 get off of Barnett HWY... The bike dies again. My friend has 2 leave since he has his novice riding test in a fwe hours so I'm stranded on the HWY on my own. I push my bike in2 a cement factory and from there I call Mundie's towing. I fall asleep on the bike again and 2 hours later the tow truck guy wakes me up.
We drop the bike off at Burnaby Kawaski and a few days later I'm informed that I have a broken crankshaft. I ask the guys there 2 fix it up and they don't even bother touching it for 5 MONTHS!
In the end it cost me $1300 2 get the damn thing back on the road. I guess the good news is that even tho my friend had such a rough nite he went 2 take his novice and still managed 2 pass.
