I posted this in the response to another thread, but thought it might me interesting for a possible sticky in the New Riders forum. I think most bcsportbikes riders probably wear a full face helmet, but just in case there was any question, of if anyone who has friends or relatives considering anything other than a full face helmet, here is some quantifiable data that might convince you (or help you convince someone else) that that beanie or even an open faced helmet may not be the way to go.
Here is a very intersting snippit from the book, "Proficient Motorcycling" as it relates to impact points found on helmets in a study of motorcycle crashes. It is from a study done in Germany.
Look at the percentages by zones and notice that the chin bar is the most likely to be the part to strike the ground (or whatever). Then look at the percentages in zones that are only covered by beanie/tupperware helmets.
I know what kind of protection I want given the statistics shown here = full face all the way.
