So I went on my first trip to Gold River, and so far, my farthest ride yet. Rode from Port Alberni to Gold River taking the low road (along the seawalk) and putted around through Campbell River before heading out the Gold River highway. Was a freakin blast! The roads are gorgeous except for when you take the turn off for Gold River, just around the lake there are about 4-5 spots where they are doing some kind of road construction and there are about 3-5 ft chunks cut across both lanes of the road, and they're not marked that well especially at 'highway' speeds. Anywhoo so just something to watch out for. Nice tight twisties around the first lake and then the highway gets a little more relaxed with some wider sweepers around the second lake, but still a blast. Also watch out for 'whoopsies' aka dips in the road. There were plenty of these to cause some discomfort just leaving GR. If you head out that way check out the Manila Grill Cafe. Excellent burgers. Prolly one of the only if NOT the only restaurant in Gold River lol. Round trip was about 600km and we left at 8am and got back to Port Alberni around 6-630 which is including a lunch break in GR and a bathroom break or two on the way home. Wasn't thinking and forgot to take my camera, but on the way out there is a rest stop with a ginormous carved moose, which we didn't hesitate to take pics at on the way back, but it was someone else's camera so until they get emailed to me I have yet to post em up. The lakes are gorgeous on the way out and all in all it was a 10 for me, mind you I don't have a lot of rides to compare it to (only really ridden S2S, the north shore mountains). Anywhoo my next task the loop and sunshine coast. Giddy yup!!
