    When buying a used slip-on exhaust...

    I was wondering what do I need to look out for when buying a used slip-on exhaust for my 2001 F4i.

    - What parts should I make sure are included in the sale? (Can, mid-pipe, screws, etc.?)
    - How can I examine the condition of the pipe? (I can't install it on my bike to test before I buy. How can I be sure that it does not malfunction?)

    Any input would be much appreciate. Thanks.

    Be sure the mounting bracket(s), springs, etc are included. You can shake the pipe, if you hear a rattle, the packing could be coming loose. Ask how many kms he/she has put on the exhaust as well.

    An older pipe will likely need a repacking job. It's not that hard to do it yourself if you've got a few tools. It's also not that expensive to have it done. Part of that will depend on how noisy it is.

    There's not much to look for in a slipon. Check the ouside for dings, see that the mid pipe fits on if one comes with it and check the screws for abuse. The only other thing is to look down the bore of the can and check the perforated core for any signs of excess corrosion. If you see signs of bad rusting or a part where the inner core tube seems like it's lumpy or possibly flaky then it's a sign that the core is rusted badly and will likely be tougher to repack.

    If you know the brand you could check around to see if the core tube is made from stainless. If so then corrosion isn't an issue. I suspect that most of them these days are stainless but many of the early cans from 6 to 10 years ago were not. I've got an older system for my race bike that had a regular steel core and it was badly rusted.
