So I'm riding my step dad's XR650L this morning with my brother and we're heading out too Sooke. I was taking a turn at somewhere between 40-50km when I hit a patch of ice/frost on a shaded area of the road. The back end goes out and the next thing I know I'm in a low side wipe out. The bike slides accross into the oncoming lane with me not far behind. Lucky for me there was no traffic at that time as I came to a stop in the middle of the other lane.
I have only been riding since September so this was a bit of shock to me at first. I quickly got up and off to the side of the road where the bike ended up. Immediatly I noticed that I didn't feel any pain and that I seemed to be alright. I wasn't bleeding anywhere, I had no broken bones and overall felt fine. As we were checking out the bike my brother noticed that the left elbow of my jacket was shredded down to the armour insert and that the knuckle guard on my glove was ground down as well as some scratches accross the side of my helmet.
Basically if I wasn't wearing my gear my elbow, knuckles and face would look like hamburger meat right now. Now I need to replce some of my gear but I walked away with only a small bruise on my knee, some cosmetic damage to the bike and was even able to go for a ride on my bike a couple hours later. So for all the other noobs out there(myslef included), if you take anything away from this experience let be to always wear your gear. That and watch out for slippery spots in the shade.
