Since I'm about to start riding in the big VanCity for the first time, I figure some protection from the stealers, other than a whiney, pleading voice, is in order. I've been looking around at alarms and security for my bike, and have found quite a range of options. At the high-end, Scorpio makes some great paging systems with all the options: tilt alert, poxy alert, various sensitivity settings, and pretty much everything you could want from a system, but they come at a pretty steep price, usually $350 and up. At the lower end are the Xena alarmed disc locks - I was going to go with one of these, since its both an audible alarm and a motion-preventative system, but I've heard the alarm part can be quite finicky, as they tend to go off on their own quite a bit. At the midrange, I found Talon Alarms of Vancouver (!). They seem to be really good, with most, if not all of the options offered by the Scorpio, with the exception of paging. They come in at a good price, around $140. I called them up, and they're happy to offer members of BCSB a group buy discount...free local shipping, and a factory plug-n-play harness for whatever bike you have, so installation should be a snap. If 5 (or more) people can commit, we can snag this deal, and have some decent protection from the heartless bastards that are thieving our honey's. Oh, and I think the alarms are insurance approved to lower rates too. All the details on the site here:
If you're interested, post or pm me, and we'll see if this can get off the ground. I'd like to get mine before Feb 15th. Mods, if I posted in the wrong section, feel free to move it (of course you don't need my permission - I just like to feel important).
