She's a 12 week old Lab and we have her until next February. We are raising her for Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) to be a service dog for the physically disabled; very similar to a seeing-eye dog.
Ruby goes everywhere we go. I take her to work 1 or 2 days a week on the bus and Skytrain and my wife takes her to school the other days. We've taken her shopping and soon into restaurants.
After a year with us, she will go to a trainer fulltime for advanced training and then matched with a client. Both of those two will then go through more training together. The entire training period takes about 2 years.
PADS supplies her food for the year and covers the basic medical coverage, shots, etc. Any equipment we purchase is tax deductible at the end of the year and any extra medical needs we cover the first $500 and they will cover the rest, similar to a deductible. Our vet has been very good and has said he has a lower rate for PADS dogs.
After our 13 year old Lab-Chow passed away last November, we thought this would be a great way to get back into the puppy thing.
PADS is expecting another litter of Labs in March and a litter of Golden Retrievers in April and are very short of puppy raisers. They are estimating between 12 and 20 puppies by the end of April that will need a home.
