Just witnessed what may have been a sorry disaster for a scooter rider who stopped behind a 3 ton truck. The rider didn't notice the reverse lights on the truck and he was positioned smack in the middle where the truck driver wouldn't be able to see the rider in his mirrors.
We happened to be driving by and saw the truck's reverse lights on and was slowly backing up, the rider had no idea because he was looking down adjusting something. People at the bus stop behind were yelling at the rider to look up and get out of the way. As we went by, I could see the truck's bumper about 2" away from the riders helmet (who was still looking down), truck still backing up - though slowly. The front part of the scooter was already under the trucks' bumper. A can't say whether the truck actually hit him, but by the time we looked back, the truck had pulled out of its parking space.
Just a reminder to all riders - whether motorbike or scooter - be aware of your surroundings, both riding in traffic and parking! You don't realized how stupid some actions are until something stupid happens!
