The 2007 fair weather riding season is beginning soon, and I have been frequenting this site more often than I have the last few months. I'm hoping some of you can help me think of a better way to sort through all the keyboard diarrhea. I've come up with the following observations:
Same shit, different day (or year, as it were). It is true, like has been brought up in this thread: here, that each year, the older members reminisce about how 'tight' the old board felt (when it was under 500/1000/2000/5000/10000 members... LOL. my how this site has grown). I think a lot of it has to do with the fact it is getting harder and harder to sort through all the chaff to find threads that I would actually open. Even then, it's a crap shoot as to whether the thread has been derailed by Team Troll or lambasted in a flame war started by some old crotchety member who is sick and tired of the newbie who thinks s/he's the next Rossi.
When you peruse the active threads, there really are only about 40 to 50 members posting regularly, and the odd thread started by an infrequent poster. The majority of threads appear to be broken into a couple of groups:
a. Rants about someone/something that no one can help or do anything about, but the poster just wants the satisfaction of spreading their shit over everything they can get their grimy hands on.
b. Posts from hypochondriacs who can't stop thinking about their eventual accident and seem to chase ambulances to make sure it isn't someone they know.
c. Drama from the latest incestual BCSB relationship between members who appear to have no social life outside of riding and this site.
d. Posts for the next dinner/coffee/food/social get together so people can perpetuate c.
e. Posts from people who attended d. and wanted to make sure no one's feelings got hurt because they did something they regret.
f. New riders asking legitimate questions to get into the sport.
g. Riders asking legitimate technical questions.
h. Ride reports.
i. I'm going for a ride posts (sadly, posted rides nowadays seem to be clusterf*cks, so I rarely attend these unless I know who's going already...)
Personally, I'm only interested in the last three listed above. The challenge is how to find these threads amongst all the other ones.
1. Ignore everyone who doesn't seem to know what they are talking about or don't know how to use their/there/they're and break/brake. Frankly, I'd prefer to have a filter that only shows threads from people I list. Much easier that way...
2. What if the new posts button only pulled up stuff you are interested in, and everything else gets the 'happy birthday dalton' treatment.
3. Get more moderators and make them more active. One warning rule on threads. If it gets flamed or disrupted, one warning. After that, it gets moved to the 'happy birthday dalton' section so the kids can play in their little sandbox without disturbing others.
4. PM the regular riders you know and trust and start a new, invite only site.
