I just got back from a week long climbing trip in Mexico at El Potrero Chico near the town of Hidalgo outside of Monterrey Mexico. If you like sport climbing and getting high on limestone this place rocks. There are over five hundred bolted sportclimbs with some up to 2000 feet.
I got a bunch of classic multi pitch climbs in. My trip started with some single pitch routes then we started the multi pitch stuff. A short 400 footer, three 6-700 foot and one 1100 foot route with one rest day. All we used was a rack of 14 quickdraws. Rapels are all set up with fixed anchors. You have to be careful with some of the loose rock but the routes are pretty clean. If you get off route you will quickly get into loose shit and lots of cactus.
Camping or rooms to rent are 10 minutes from the canyon. Food and beer are plentiful and cheap.
We stayed at La Posada which was a good clean spot and lots of climbing beta and a small climbing shop. www.elpotrerochico.com
Might have to make it a yearly trip. Anyone else been there?
