We took delivery on my wife's new Piaggio MP3 yesterday morning. So after an hour in a local parking lot where my darling ripped it up, enjoying her new toy, I got a chance to take it for a quick rip up to Squamish with some of my sport bike bros.
I gotta say that 3 wheels is every bit of fun as 2. Maybe even more so in a few respects. For such small wheels, it feels incredibly planted in every turn. You point it in a direction and it just rails along the corner. You've got to remind yourself that you have two wheel up front, underneath all of that bodywork because instinctually you feel that you're riding a standard scooter with no more than one wheel fore and aft.
The front two wheels lean with the bike but at the same time, you feel more planted than a single tire on the road in front of you. Around town it's more fun than a barrel of monkeys on magic mushrooms but on the highway, cornering at speeds greater than 120kph, you start to discover the scooters limitations and the back end starts to wash and the suspension cries for mercy. It's still surprisingly fast for a scooter. I've ridden full size Harley Davidsons that don't accelerate as quickly or cruise at highways speeds as comfortably.
The attention that you get from absolutely everyone is really astounding. Every single person on the side of the road just stops, drops their jaw and points. You can hear people yelling "THAT SCOOTER'S GOT 3 WHEELS!" I was laughing in my helmet for hours just cruising around the neighbourhood.
Yesterday I clocked about 160 total kilometers between goofing around the city and a rip to Squamish and back. The MP3 drank half a tank of gas. It's about $6 to fill the tank. Amazing.
As someone said yesterday, it's like the bastard child of a scooter and a Smart Car.
