Over the last few weeks, road crews have been pretty active around Prest road exit on Hwy1 near Chilliwack.
If I recall, there have been numerous accident around that spot over time. And I believe that some fatalities occurred a few months back when a truck crossed the median and landed onto an oncoming mini-van. The locals will confirm that I bet.
Well it looks like the powers to be have decided to do something about it. And rather than installing more concrete dividers, we now have a brand new shiny cable fence. I have not seen one so far around the Lower mainland. Maybe on I5 but not here.
I don't know about you, but I really do not like that at all. This is a fairly high speed corner on a road who see all sort of users with all sorts of skills.
In the event of a high speed low side fall, I will imagine that a rider fully geared up will have no problem sliding a few meters.
Now those nice shinny cables and little metal poles every couple of meters or so looks like very nice meat grinder to me. Here goes one arm, here goes one leg, here goes one head for eg.
Where I come from (Froggy land) I remember very well the 'Association of pissed off riders' (imagine BCCOM at the national level) in the mid-eighties campaigning and protesting very loudly with the authorities to have security fences modified throughout the countryside. At the time many country roads corner where bordered by those. It was jolly good for a car, but many bikers lost limbs or their lives sliding underneath them and hitting the support metal post.
So I am pretty amazed and puzzled to see this genius contraption appearing on the Trans-Canada highway.
I would rather see a concrete divider or even nothing. I want to believe that not a single bike will ever crash there.
So here you are. What is your take?
Are you concrete or cable?
Will this setup makes you slowdown?
Are those poles designed to collapse easily upon impact?
There is a level difference between westbound and eastbound:
- If you are westbound will you crash in the ditch before hitting the fence?
- If you are eastbound will you fly over the fence or hit the cables square on?
(picture 2 is taken westbound and you can see the levels pretty well.
The little concrete bases during construction.
Almost complete set-up. The final cable is not under any tension yet.
