OK, so I just wrapped up the full rebuild on a 83 XL250R engine. Followed the manual which was to put the timing mark at TDC. Did that and then set the freeplay to 3mm (allowed is 1~3mm). Then when the engine is running, at this 'correct' setting the cable & lever is pulsing with the rocker arm. I didn't think this is right so I loosened off the play a bit till the pulsing stopped. Anyhow the bike start and runs, and I guess you are safer to run a loose cable vs. a tighter one. (valves guaranteed to be seating this way). Anyhow should the lever be pulsing or not?
