Susan and I are in Warm Springs , Arkansas as I write this trip update. We left Ottawa a week ago Sunday and have ridden down the east coast and into Washington DC. TOday we are taking a rest and service day ( Susan 's FJR needs tires) Warm Springs was the childhood home of Bill Clinton
THe heat has been managable thought yesterday it was between 34 and 37 c all day (567 miles)
Trip highlights so far
Blue Ridge Parkway, and Natchez Trace Parkway. We rode Deal's Gap Friday morning at 7:30 am before the accidents started. Highway101 north of SanFran is a better road but as Susan said Deal's Gap has excellent PR and a myth about it but remember a Squirrel is a rat with a good PR team.
After we rode the Dragon back and forth and were eating breakfast the first of many daily accidents occurred. You ride the gap using only the 50% of your lane closest to the fog line. THis gives you the largest safety margin from oncoming riders crossing the line. It is a nice mix of riders on the Gap the locals who know the road ( My pal who owns Sport Touring Accessories at the Gap is a daily commuter on his DRZ 650, the bike clubs ( it was R1 week with full factory support, the car clubs, and the rest of the great unwashed cruisers, wings with trailers, HD clubs and of course the 42 foot tractor trailor rig that had to get through as we were having breakfast.
It is a freak show and the next day when leaving we rode an extra 70 miles to avoid riding it at 10 am on a Saturday fully loaded with our gear.
I followed a cruiser rider back to our hotel from the DG restaurant and the road was reasonably twisty (they all are) he crossed the centre line on every corner.
We had an amazing 2 lane day yesterday riding across the Mississippi Delta and the history and poverty make a sad contrast.
Yeterday was alos the culmination of Susan's almost one year project to join the Iron Butt Association
Susan finished her IBA Master Traveller, Susan refused to ride a SS1000 describing it as something of little interest to her. THe Parks Tour had appeal so off she went. Ride recap
