Different front and rear tire....OK???
I tried the search, but I could not narrow it anywhere close.
Is it ok to have a different front and rear tire? If yes, then do they have to be the same tread or anything like that?
My rear tire needs replaced and it was a metzeler mez4 160/60 69w.
The place here in Fort St. John can not find one and they figure it has been discontinued. If I'm looking for a tire to replace it does metzeler give a list of what is best suited to replace it? The place I'm dealing with seems pretty clueless.
In general will any tire with a like tread work?
I checked ebay and could not find one. Is there online or a shop you know of with good stock I should look for?
I like to replace them in pairs with a match. Many don't, and I think strictly speaking as long as the tire is similar (bias or radial, and similar purpose) you should be OK. The MEZ4 was OEM on early SV650's and IIRC in this size so I'm sure there will be a replacement from Metzeler, maybe the Roadtec Z6 as this is a similar sport touring design. It's also similar to a Bridgestone BT020, a Michelin Pilot Road, and a bunch of other sport touring radials.
While the Avon Storm ST and Conti Road Attacks are both fantastic tires and I would highly recommend either, they are a variable belt density radial design and may not be compatible with your existing front tire. If you are looking to replace both these would be worth looking at.
If you don't want to mail order from a place in the states with the brokerage hassles and costs, try Chris or Bill at 5th Gear, they offer really good deals on michelin pilot power packages. (604) 244-7666 http://www.5thgear.ca/ I'm sure they would do a mail order to help you out.
