I have a question about my 1997 YZF750. The other day I went to start the bike and was unsuccessful. Prior to this problem, my bike has been running perfect. I have never had an issue with starting it up or how it runs. Here's the problem:
-turn ignition key on (lights come on)
-turn starter switch on
-hit ignition in an attempt to start engine
-solenoid makes a loud electrical click and all my electrical components shut off
-turn ignition key off
-turn ignition key on (lights come back on and electrical works)
then the whole procedure repeats itself.
After taking the bike apart, I noticed the connectors that are tucked in behind the front-left fairing that lead to the main ignition were a little burnt. I removed them and replaced the connectors. I think I have the problem narrowed down to my solenoid (starter relay if you prefer) or my starter. Again, I never had a problem with anything before, everything was running like brand new. I have checked and cleaned all the connections leaving me to believe it is not the ground or a poor connection. It is not my battery as I hooked it up to my electrical tester and my electrical system is getting 12.23 volts when powered on or off.
My question is: Is this a solenoid problem or a starter problem? I think its the solenoid because I can't even hear the power going to my starter. I tried to bypass the solenoid and it still wouldn't work for me though. Has anyone had this happen before? Are there any guru's out there that can assist? The weather is too nice for me not to be riding!!!
