A local resident who lives on a downhill hairpin, with his lot lower than the road, has petitioned council for permission to install a roadside barrier that would consist of steel cables stretched between giant cement blocks. The proposal includes the structure being hidden and "greened out" with shrubs etc so that one could not see it from the road.
This type of barrier is banned in many countries as it can easily amputate the limbs of a motorcyclist or bikecycle rider who impcts it.
One council member raised the question of motorcycle safety and put the proposal on hold. I am not sure what has happened with this in the last few weeks as I was away.
This is a VERY important matter to us as riders... if you wiped out into this thing you'd never know with hit you... it would slice you up in a second. Allowing this sort of barrier to be constructed sets a precident in BC... these barriers arent used, and we certainly dont want the government to use than as a cheap alternative in the future.
We need to dig further into this and contact West Vancouver city council and let them know that motorcyclist use the road too.
