the local ducati dealership has the new 999 on display.
A lot ppl standing around humming and hawing over. The only thing i heard coming out of everyone's mouth was.... complaints.
What's this, wtf is that? they shoulda done this, done that etc..
Magazine and e-zine reports have said you have to see this bike in person to appreciate it.
I've now seen the bike in person, sat on it, moved around on it.. so here's my appreciation:
Front stying is not that bad. Love the leading edge 'spoilers'. The mirror treatment is awesome.
And uhh... well that's it actually.
The other points:
This bike is LOOOONG.
The bike looks like a long long wooden plank, and feels like it.
The entire tailsection is wide and FLAT and incredibly uninspiring.
The cockpit sticks out and up, rather like an sv650 or tl1000r. Personally i like the compact fit an R6 or RC51 offers and in my biased opinion, is how a sportbike should be.
There is a lot of impressive metalwork in the cockpit, but it looks like slabs of heavy iron everywhere. Seriously. if they gave it the billet aluminum treatment, sweetness. But it feels/looks like cast iron up everywhere.
To top it off, when I sat on the bike.. it hurt.
There's edges everywhere that are incredibly irritating. The seat makes the RC51 saddle feel like an airbag, no give whatsoever.
Overall I'm very disappointing. I want to like the new ducati, i really do, but it comes up short. I had a look at the old 996 and the oldstyle really is a lot better.
If I won the lottery and bought a new ducati, i would definately pick up the old 998 style. New 999 just sux. The 999 would have to have some pretty amazing handling to make me pick it.
