I've got a 98zx7r, i've got problems starting the bike and an eractic idle suddenly appeared today. Keep in mind the bike only gets started and taken for short city rides maybe 1 or 2 days a week.
Lately if I don't try and at least start it everyday, then I have a problem starting the bike on the weekend.
I'll hear a couple of cranks from the starter motor, then a loud snap, then a single weak crank from the starter...then nothing.
I try and start it again...1 single crank from the starter...then nothing.
I try and roll start it but it won't fire, finally after a couple minutes of rolling and fooling with the starter but the bike turns over, and the starter is back to normal.
The starter sounds fine when I start the bike everday but if I leave the bike for a couple days or more....snap...then no cranking action from the starter motor, only the single crank.
I can hear the loud snap coming from the motor itself, my guess is-
the starter gears are slipping off the crank wheel. Am I right, if so what do I do.
And now my new problem is the bike is idling very eractically, going from a normal rpm down to almost 0 then back to normal again quite quickly. It doesn't stall out, and it'll rev up fine but, the idle sucks. I put in some carb cleaner with my fuel about 3 weeks ago (or 2 tanks of fuel ago).
The local bike shop recommended I put some in if it sounded like it was choking at lower rpms while riding. (my guess is that I didn't clean out the deposits left from the carb cleaner and the jets are clogged or my air filter is clogged, I haven't checked it out yet.)
If you can help me figure out my problem, let me know.
