So I was listening to Bruce Allen's 'Sound Off' show on CFOX on Sunday night while driving home, and they were talking about the stripping down of Christmas. Particularly here in BC, now everything has to be 'politically correct'. Kiss my Pakie ass! Ooohh, I called myself a racial slur instead of "Indo-Canadian".
Anyways, they were saying how the Christmas Tree that is traditionally put up on the Legislative grounds in Victoria now has to simply be called The Tree, and they can't refer to it as The Christmas Tree anymore. Not only that, kids aren't allowed to have Christmas Pageants in schools anymore. And I'm not talking about naitivity (sp?) pageants with Jesus+Mary+Three Wisemen (which may go against church/school rules)...I'm saying that they aren't allowed to have Christmas pageants/plays/recitals if Santa and elves are involved. WTF? Same goes for highschools...no more 'Christmas' dances, it has to be a 'Winter Dance'. Even the federal government is getting involved...the ads for the Canadian Mint no longer have "The 12 Days of Christmas", I think the song has been changed to "The Twelve Days of Giving" I've even had similar treatment at the workplace...I remember at work last December I wasn't allowed to say "Merry Christmas" to customers anymore, it had to be "Happy Holidays".
My question is...how do all of you guys feel about Christmas? Especially those of you that ARE NOT Christian in any way? I'm Sikh (well, a non-practicing Sikh I guess) and I can tell you that my family goes ALL OUT every Christmas...you know, tree, decorations, presents, family flying in from all over the country, big Christmas dinner, etc. My parents and the rest of my family are very religious though. I think that rules like the ones listed above are intended to protect people like me...but from what? I've never been offended by other people celebrating a holiday that is obviously very important to them...the same way most people don't get offended when there is a parade for a big Sikh holiday like Vaisakhi.
How about the rest of you out there? Those of you that are celebrating Kwanzaa, Hanuka or Ramadon (spelled wrong?)...would you feel offended or upset if I were to mistakenly say "Merry Christmas" to you as a friendly comment? Or all of you non-Christian Asians, I know there are a lot on this board...I'm assuming you have no real 'holiday' at this time of year, but how do you feel about Christmas related displays at stores, schools, places of business or government offices?
Christians out there...how do you feel about the bastardization of your #1 holiday?
Pageans...how do you feel about the Christians stealing your holiday, and making it their own?
I'm not happy about the de-christmasization of Christmas!
