For the tech people who have been following Negroponté's OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) Project for the last few years, it is finally going public in November under the moniker of XO.
The gist of the concept is a computer has been developed for kids in the developing world that is supposedly affordable in an attempt to bring up the standard of living in poorer countries by giving them access to cheap technology. May sound like a stupid North American upper-middle class idea but the idea IMO has merit.
David Pogue has an article and a video on it. Article and video can be found here. I would recommend watching Pogue's video.
