    lowerin a 1000rr

    im curious how low a 2004 1000rr can go compared to a 1999 zx6r. i know these are diff bikes and years, will the 1000rr physically be able to be as low as the zx6r. if stock suspension to loweest setting...

    or is the 1000rr physically bigger that it will never get as low as the zx6r???

    Well, it's a sportbike so if you want to retain the best handling as well as the most possible amount of lean angle then you'll only lower it as much as you can barely get away with and still have the bike fit you. Or if you're trying to make a dedicated drag racing bike from it then that's different but if you're doing that then I doubt you'd be asking here about this.

    First of all you need to shave the saddle to make it thinner and narrower. This is the very first line of attack to lower a bike for a rider that is vertically challenged. Once that work is done then the bike itself can be surveyed to figure out just what the minimum amount of lowering is that will let the rider be comfy.

    Just softening the stock suspension to let the bike sag as low as possible is a TERRIBLE way to lower the bike. The handling will be marshmallow like and you'll loose most of what makes it a sportbike in terms of handling. The right way to do the job is with a lowering link on the rear and to slide the forks up in the clamps at the front. But again there's limits to this. The forks can only slide up to the point where the front fender does not come up and hit the front fairing or lower triple clamp. At the rear you don't want the swingarm to come up past horizontal with the rider aboard and on the pegs in the normal riding position. Ideally it would still be a little angled down to the axle. The front and rear need to be lowered the same amount and then refined to tune the feel of the steering since lowering the forks in the clamps will slightly reduce the trail distance and some work on fine tuning the fork positions to alter the rake and trail to values that restore as much as possible the original feel may be required.
