    My what?

    A new (to me) computer problem

    My Kids' and wife's computer had a small window pop up that said it needed to restart and will do so in 60, 59, 58, well you get the idea. When it shut off and tried to reboot, it gave us a black screen and then this message showed up;

    system disk or disk error
    lace and press any key when ready

    I'm a computer idiot at the best of times so I was hoping that someone could help me before I take it in to a shop in the next couple of days. There is lots of stuff on this computer so I don't want to have to reformat if I can help it. If you've seen this before and/or have any useful information, I would really appreciate it.
    I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

    my knowlege is definitely outdated, but i believe you have to get into your bios and reset it. it is usually an F-key when you first boot up. it will tell you on the screen exactly how to access the bios. you can screw stuff up in there though so best to get a second and third opinion.

    I would lean more towards there being an issue with either your Operating system files, or your hard drive has gone kapoop. The only thing in your bios that could help (that I can think of) is it'll be able to tell you if your hard drive is recognized or not. If it is, then it's probably a software issue.

    What operating system were you running? Is it a 'name brand' computer? If it is, you may have some recovery software that came with it, and that could fix your problem if it's software related.

    Anyways, I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable folks here will be able to assist you further.

    Could be a virus or trojan. Are you running a good anti-virus program and keeping it up-to-date?

    This is rarely a good sign, unless you really do have a non-bootable disk or CD in

    If not, it's usually bad. Either your filesystem has become corrupt, partition table has been lost, or other disk damage. Of course, with windows, this sort of thing can just pop up on it's own, and usually does, eventually. I think you can even get this msg if the underlying DOS subsystem goes sideways So, I'm guessing you're running either XP or the outdated 98/2000? You could try re-installing *without* the format to see if you can restore whatever's been damaged without data loss... or, you can boot a rescue cd (linux livecd works wonders for this) and see if you can evac any personal data out across the network or to other storage mediums. Of course, you may be limited by what you have at hand, which could mean you're basically screwed if all you have is this one, lonely, broken PC.

    But don't give up on the data just yet... take it to someone who knows what they're doing
    and no, i don't do windows

    Fuck I am a bigger computer idiot than I first thought. My wife told me what had happened and of course left out the very important fact that she was transferring pictures from a floppy to the hard drive so it was indeed an non-bootable disc problem I'm sure the fact that she got me out of bed at 11:30 didn't help either. I woke up this morning and checked the drives and there it was. Now I just have to try and get her to admit why the computer had to be restarted in the first place. Hmmm, maybe she was downloading porn. Atta girl. Thanks for all the help everybody
