When Tasers were first introduced and reported to the public through news reports etc. the Taser was purportedly going to provide a non-lethal alternative to the lethal firearm and would only be used where appropriate by well trained professionals and in a regulatory environment that would prevent their abuse.
Apparently it has evolved into an expedient and convenient alternative to establishing communication with possible lethal consequences and administered by professionals that are seemingly unaware of or indifferent to situations where the use of the Taser may be fatal.
Make no mistake. I am NOT against the use of Tasers. They should be standard equipment to every properly trained professional that is authorised to carry a firearm. Unfortunately, Tasers are not regarded with the same respect as a firearm and to be used only after all attempts at reason have failed and an individual is actively attempting to harm themselves or others.
It would seem this needs to change.
