    2001 R6 / 6th Gear RPM

    Hey guys,

Just wondering if 5500 RPM is in the right range for the 6th gear on a 2001 Yamaha R6 to be at 100 kmh?

This is my first sportbike (had a Shadow before), and it just feels like it needs an extra gear, or am I just not used to a high RPM bike?

    Thanks! Appreciate the help

You're just not used to a high rpm bike. I like a little more get up and go when I ride so this is probably a little different that you might ride, however on my 600 (gsxr) i sit around that 8,000 range in almost any gear... Highways I'm in second or third just cruising, however usually the later.
Next time you're having a bad day think about this... You and your brother are conjoined twins, he is gay you are not. He has a date coming over in an hour and you share one ass.

You'll probably notice that if you rev up another 500rpm to 6000...you'll be traveling much faster (say 25kph). The taller gear will sit around 5500 at 100kph but at reline you'll be going 250kph or up. Pop it down to 3rd and goose it to feel what gears are for ;P

2001 R6.....i'd be cruising around at atleast 7000rpm's. choose a gear apropriate for the speed you want but use 7000 as your rpm. your not quite in the sweet spot of power but your also not going to lag it to much if you want to accelerate briskly.
That that doesn't kill us forces us to live with a busted up bike!!

Wow, that's amazing, I was worried 5500 rpm was too high.
I'm just so used to Ford's low rpm car V8.. haha

yeah...your R6 is going to operate at pretty much the exact opposite as a ford V8

I never got into 6th gear in my 1999 R6...at 100km/h i'd be in 2nd, 3rd if you want to be lower in the rpm range

go to a safe straight stretch and hit the red line in a few gears to see what it feels like...wakes you up better then

5000rpm is only 1/3 up the range so yah, no problem

Inbetween bikes now. Thanks for bringing up bad feelings.
I use to shift around 8 or 9 on my '03 R6 and unless I was doing over 120 I'd very rarely be in 6th gear. I did notice that I got crappy mileage.

So when commuting I shift around 6 and I get a lot better mileage. Still want to be in the Powerband but just not as high up.

It really depends on how you're riding at the time but unless you try the upper end, you'll never know what works.

If you toddle along on an R6 in 6th gear at 100kph, watch out for old geezers on FZ6's who'll blow by you in 2nd gear....
