I have joined up here a couple days ago and have been reading lots of great info on bike and general information for new riders. By background consisted of riding dirt bikes for my mid teens (I am 25 now) Now after graduating university and a steady job, I was looking to get back into off-road riding, so went out and bought a brand new CRF250X and I love it ( been riding for the past 6 months). But now I am feeling the urge to go on-road.....
So I have come to a cross roads on what I should do to make the transition to on-road riding. I still love off road, but want the best of both, and a bike that I can do both comfortably until I can buy a larger street bike. My ultimate goal is to by April 2009, be over in Europe traveling around on a bike with a backpack. (Thinking a Honda VRF 800 would do this nicely)
So I have though of some choices and am trying to get input into what I should do to make it work..
A) Street "legalize" my 250X and learn on that (though I can not do highway speed on the 250x because the engine is NOT a long distance runner, and am told wound out on he highway several local bikes have ceased up)
B) Trade in for a Honda 650L which is street legal, but I am worried the bike will be too bulky for the off road, but would be a comfortable street bike. I think I would be more comfortable with this sort of bike over a high strung street bike.
C) Buy some crappy street bike (gs500 or something, or a honda cb400) If I purchased a 2nd bike, i would not want to spend more than a couple grand on this bike, cheap and dirty to get me through the first year of learning on-road would be ideal.
