Hey everybody, I've had this business idea that I've been working on for the last couple weeks and I think I'm ready to get some feedback and offer up a realistic rough figure for what it would cost to rent. I'd also like some feedback on realistically how much mileage/wear a bike goes through in a month. also i'm looking to see how much demand there would be for this service to determine how viable it would be as a business.
I'm thinking of starting a business that targets new riders who are wanting to get into motorcycling but don't necessarily want to buy a 250 to learn on then sell it after they're finished. just think of how many starter bikes you see on craigslist that have super low miles. I would stock a few different 250s and maybe a 500GS or similar, if i could find some decent 400cc bikes that would be great as well as i could rent them out for the same as a 250cc. I would also have a couple scooters for rent as part of the business as i don't think there are any available for rent in Vancouver. I would encourage renters to take a motorcycle training course if they haven't already or to at the very least ride with somebody who has been riding for a few years and has the proper experience to be in a teaching position. I would also have gear for rent for people if they don't have their own, but would also encourage riders to get their own good gear if they're serious about getting into the sport. If a rider doesn't have a full class 6 they will need somebody with a valid class 6 to rent the bike for them and teach them and ride with them and be responsible for them. any damage that is incurred on the bike will be the responsibility of the renter to pay for new parts (mainly thinking of turn signals being busted off would be the most common thing). all of the bikes would have as much protectors on it as possible to prevent damage (frame sliders if available, engine crash bars ect.). All of the proper maintenance will be handled by the company and will be done according to the service schedules provided by the OEM.
Renting the bike would include insurance in the price which would cover 2 million liability and 300 deductible for comprehensive and collision. extra insurance would also be available but not needed to rent mostly because its retardedly overpriced IMO.
Rates for renting a 250:
month - $450
2 weeks - $275
weekly - $150
daily - $25
Scooter rental rates:
month - $300
2 weeks - $200
week - $100
day - $20
if i did get a 500cc bike it would be around
$550 a month if i did happen to offer them.
I would also drop off and pickup the motorcycle for an extra $20
now these are rough prices based on my estimates for maintenance costs and the quotes that i received for insurance plus what i would need to pay overhead and all that good stuff.
I would get a 250 ninja and a 250 KLX for sure and a couple of standard/cruiser type 250s
Ok, give me feedback. do you think its a good idea or a bad one? if you don't like the idea please explain why.
how do you feel the pricing is? too high? would you be willing to pay a bit more? is it affordable for you?
what costs or problems do you think I've overlooked? I know people drop bikes all of the time when they're learning... I could also provide a disk lock with each bike rental. it would be a xena one so there wouldn't that much chance of riding off with it on.
I'm also trying to get a feel for demand for this service.
would you recommend this to your friends or people who you know that are wanting to get into motorcycling?
I'll probably host a few polls when this idea gets a little further along as the first page is almost poll free as of now :P
If there where any private companies that would happen to do insurance for rental bikes i could probably lower the rates as well.
