ICBC Theft Recoveries

Here's a question for all you wonderfully experienced riders:

I often see people advertising their rebuilt title bikes that came from an ICBC theft recovery, nothing wrong with it, etc.

So where do us normal kids with dreams of buying project bikes get our hands on these bikes? Do they hold auctions or is it only for private buyers?

Thanks a lot for any info.

They are sold into the "trade," primarily.
Why not call the local (to you) ICBC salvage yard....?

When ICBC offered my recovered bike to me as a buy back I was told if I did not buy it, it would be sold as part of a bulk buy for some salvage yard. I guess a salvage yard bids on a bunch of different bikes and stuff in varying conditions.

There is a BCSB member (turbosonoma I think) who often posts salvage bikes that may be interest to the members here. Maybe PM him and he can probably give you a few answers.

Here's the scoop on ICBC salvage yards:
1. Dismantle only and rebuildables are sold by sealed bids to registered salvage buyers only
2. General sales and Total Theft items are sold by sealed bids to anyone that wants to put a bid on them.
3. Sales are held weekly, depending on the salvage yard, the bids are open on Mondays at 9am or 10am.

All total theft vehicles will more likely have a warranty block from the manufacturer. I know that because I bought a 2006 GMC sierra with less than 7000 kms on it and GM put a total block on the warranty.
Pricing; just to give you an idea, my truck retailed new at just over $30 000,
I bought it for $19 300.

If you want a list of upcoming items for sale, go to any salvage yards (Abbotsford on queen street, New west is just under the queensborough bridge) and get a bid sheet.

Wow, you guys are fantastic. Thanks so much for the help. Shovelhead, how did you go about becoming an official buyer? Is it worth the time for the casual builder? And Turbo, next time I'm in Van I will definately drop by and see you. Again, thanks so much, guys.

I scout, inspect and bid on equipments for my friend's shop. This is my part time work (more like a hobby to me) To become a registered buyer you have to be a legitimate business and a lot of red tape. Unless you have a business that rebuilds or dismantle equipments, you won't get in.
As a casual buyer for stolen and recovery and general salvage items, there are great deals and not so great deals there.
I'm happy with the deal I got on my trudk, saved almost 11g's plus taxes for a truck that had less than 7000 kms.

For this week's sale, there is no stolen and recovery total theft for sale.

Purchasing a bike with rebuilt status

What does this mean. Would the bike be harder to sell later. Is purchasing one with this status something I should stay away from or is this potentially something that could be a good deal at the end?

The problem: you bought it cheap, you must sell it cheap. If you resell it though, rest assured, someone will buy it. The bike's history is also called into question, but in my opinion this is true for any used bike you buy.

I'm a big fan of salvaged/rebuilt bikes. My saying: the problem with new bikes is that there is nothing to fix.
