: What kind of gas mileage do you get?

I was just wondering what everyone else was getting in terms of fuel economy. I do not think my bike is very good, I get about 160km before my fuel light comes on.

My tank has an 18L capacity, but I have no idea when the light comes on. But using a rough estimate of a 2L reserve gives me 10km per L. That is HORRIBLE! My 1999 CBR 900 did better than that, so I wanted to see what everyone else was getting. :)

I've got a 93 zx-6e with a muzzy and jet kit. I lost a little mileage after the mods.

I meant to vote for between 35-40 mpg. Not kilometers per litre

I'll get about 170 before I decide to fill up. Chances are that your fuel light will come on quite early, with lots of gas to spare. Next time you fill up, record the amount of gas you put in. Then record the distance you went the next time you fill up. Divide your distance by the amount of gas you used between fill-ups. It should come to more than 10km/L

I feel like such a cheapskate, trying to figure out my gas mileage on a motorcycle.

I get about 180km before my reserve light comes on after 14L.

180/14=12.8km/L on a $10 fill up.

I get about 14-15 l/km

All I know is I get 240 Km out of my tank before I have to switch to researve. With researve I have gotten 290 km. If I baby it I have gotten 320 with researve but that is no fast acceleration and not going over 5 grand :rolleyes

Holy crap Ryan, that is awesome! :eek

I may be off on my reserve estimate, but I am still not going to come close to Ryan's numbers.

What kind of rpm's do you run at? I almost always keep my bike around 7-8k, so I am almost always in first or second gear. I think I am going to try a tank where I accelerate normally, and keep the rpm's in the 3k range, see what kind of a difference that makes. :)

Yeah for cruising 7000 to 8000 rpm is way to high, keep it around 4000 to 5000rpm. I have a 99 cbr 900 and I get 240km before I have to switch it in reserve. I think it would push to 280 km with reserve, but my rpm are usually at 5000rpm for everyday cruising.

manny, I thought that I had gotten about 250 on my old 99 Fireblade, but after I figured out what my 929 was getting I just assumed I was rembering incorrectly, that the old Blade could not have done so well and this one is so bad.

I was out today riding two up, so I kept the bike in a gear higher than I normally ride in order to smooth things out for my passenger and so far I am exceeding my previous fuel economy trials. :)

I get the same as atomlowe,

180-190km until my warning light comes on, then i'll have another 20-40km after that.

fockin kawi's !!
they don't come with a warning light !!

i usually turn the nozzle to reserve around 170

If I keep the RPM around 6,000 I get about 160km till I have to switch to res.

If I ride at or around 8,000 PRM I get a blistering 112km till I have to switch to res.

I have a 18l with 3.5l res.

I get around 160km before I have to switch it to reserve, and my fills are usually around 15L (works out to 10.6km/L)

Hmm, maybe I should keep off the throttle. 14km/L rough...

P.S. My reserve light on my CBR 929 comes on at approx 1 gallon (3.8L?) :confused

Xyban,

I have a '01 929 as well and your mileage seems consistant with what myself and other 929 owners have said, vrecksler aside of course,.. and yeah the reservice is 3.8l

I seem to hit between 200-230km before the reserve light comes on.

Damn, Xyban and dknite, do you have PCIII's? I am just running the base map, and have heard that PC's will ruin some of the mileage in favour of performance, but you guys are killing me! :)

the last few days I've been trying 87 octane. Before I used to run 94 octane and was always getting 170-185 until my fuel light came on, well with 87, i've been getting around 190-210 until my light hit. This is all city riding mind you.... hmm.... gonna try 87 again and see what I get, then try 94 after that and see if I notice anything different.... but I was surprised when I hit 212 today until my fuel light came on....

04-10-2002, 10:04 PM
i've been riding a zx12r to break-in for a customer and it must be the worst mileage ever!its like a freeking truck!or maybe its my throttle hand!wait till the pc3 goes on friday it'll probably be worse for christ sakes oh well its a bullit anyway, keep you posted once i actually do a mileage check it only has 400 kms on it .:rider

vrecksler,.

No man, no PCIII here,.. thats probably whats killing you a bit,.. but the mileage you are talking about seems pretty bad,.. try reloading your map,.. or loading a different one... cause i can't see it being THAT harse on gas unless you are alwayse on the gas in really high RPM

Since my Speedo is off (hence my odo is off) I'm guessing:

$8 (@79.9) = 160Km's Indicated, ~140 real Kms.

10 Litres = 140 Kms = 14km/L

So there's my Guess.. 14km/L

Jim.

You could be right Jim, I was figuring my reserve as 2L but it appears as if it is actually about double that. :)

I got 257km/13 litres=57mpg! on my trip to Earls Cove on april 28 sun.I have a Yosh RS-3 full race,BMC air filter and its re-mapped to +5,+10,+5, idle 11:00 using the Yosh recalibration box(North Shore Suzuki/Yamaha has one).........ken.

19 liter tank, 4 liter reserve IIR.. I get anywhere from 180 to 215 on a reserve depending on riding (215 was a record during break in hehe, 180 was the other day on the bridge.. putter putter DOH!).

so thats
180/15 = 12
to
215/12 = 14.3

Probably regardless, going to be in the 10-15 range, might get a little more when I switch to full synth down the road.. get closer to 14 again.

Oh and thats on 92 octane, manual for my bike says 90+. I ran 94 for a while but I don't think it affected mileage much.

generally i fill up around the 200k mark. i hit reserve around 170k. this morning i was at 205k and put 14.87 litres in the tank. i guess i had about 5 litres left to burn. the most i have ever put in the tank at one fillup was 19.5 litres

Almost 20km, but not quite. most sportbikes will be in this range.

I can get 200k's before my fuel light comes on... and 60 after that, but I never leave it that long.... My old 96 carbed 750 would go an easy 250 before the light came on..... my 99 is running a bit rich down low,(needs a remap).......

I usually can go for 220k before the petrol fairy pays a visit. I do comeinto town from PoCo though. High speed freeway action.

Jim.

A bunch of us tested this assumption once, we found our speedos varied by over 20% at 100kph but the odometers were within 1%. Not really surprising given the mechanisms are different for each.

Anyway, my B12 gets 200km before reserve and then another 50km before dry. It depends a lot on how it's ridden, I've gotten as low as 150km and as high as 250km before reserve.

S'okay,

I reliably get 240 - 250 km before I need to fill up. And i usually put in 16 - 16.5 L (I think its a 17 litre tank, and it ain't got no reserve that I know of).

soooo.. 240/16 = brain hurt.. need calculator 15 Km/L.

But that's with my physical disability (permanently twisted wrist) too..

Wow this thread is old...

I go about 280-290km before my light comes on which means I've used about 17L of fuel. With the 4L reserve, I should be able to go about 350km before I'm completely dry.

I love having this kind of range as my first street bike (1986 Yamaha Maxim 700) would only do about 120km and I needed gas bad!

80 MPG !? Holy crap!

I've got a 400, drive only stop and go in the city and I get 17 Km/l or 46 mpg.

I find it really depends on city or hwy and the speed. I've done some long runs on the interstates in the US averaging 120-130 km/h and was getting around 17 km/l. Around town I only get 11-15 km/l depending on how I ride the bike.

The bigger the displacement the faster you can burn through the fuel under acceleration.

So you managed to ride the majority of 257 kms downhill with a tailwind? Simply remarkable. Even in those conditions on a 1l twin those results are still unbelievable. Did you have to push it for 100kms?

THat's impressive. I've heard the FZs were great on gas. My ZRX will get about 250kms out of 17 to 18L with some good railing thrown in but that only leaves 2 litres in the tank.

I ran out of gas once near BB with nobody in sight, so I dont wait to switch to reserve. Up until now, I have always gotten near 12.5L after 250km, without fail.

I've not worked out the exact mileage on my bike yet... but I know that it's not all that good.
Whether it's just a feeling or not, my bike is happiest around 8-12K RPM... always moving with the traffic. (Stock everything in the engine bay.)
But there's always a trade-off w/ the mileage thing. I think it's the stop start with traffic. (I even try not to be the first guy to the next red light.)

Longer trips, I can dial down the RPM and dial in the mileage. (IE. Start using the marathon gears instead of the sprint ones.) I'm sure that the occasional "BIG GRIN MOMENTS" have their fair share on shortening the mileage.

But as mentioned ... it's $14 - $15 MAX to fill it with the good stuff. And better yet... it's like more tokens into the video game. (Never have I smiled so much when I'm at the pump... 'cuz... it means that I'm riding my bike and I'm happy!!!
