But the CBR500R is on the top of my list if I downsize (it looks a lot better than my SV, especially the 2016 with the LED headlights)
\r\n \r\n
\r\n
\r\n
Bought a CBR500R last year for my wife. I get to ride it around once in a while.
\r\n
\r\nHere is what I think:
\r\nOn highways, I didn\'t get blown around and had no problems with overtaking and such.
\r\nABS is good, I would definitely get that, its worth the extra $500, maybe psychological but worth it for me.
\r\nComfortable riding position (even after shaving an inch off the seat), it is good enough for cruising around back roads and commuting.
\r\nIt is fun to be on your own, on back-roads, has enough to keep you entertained and is a bit more forgiving.
\r\n
\r\nIt is a different kind of fun, being a smaller bike, it is more flick able, forgiving and has some some oomph once the rpm climbs above 6000.
\r\n
\r\nIf I ever have to go to DT, or know I would get stuck in traffic/commute, I prefer to take the Honda. We also started doing all 2up riding on the Honda.
\r\n
\r\nThings I did not like:
\r\n- Lack of a gear indicator
\r\n- Foot-pegs (touring pants can get stuck on the peg, it has a weird lip)
\r\n- Horn is barely audible
\r\n- They interchanged the horn and indicator switches, this is very annoying.
\r\n- Pulling the panels off is a bit of work, especially for oil filter changes.
\r\nFirst three are easily fixed with aftermarket parts, takes 10mts each.
\r\n
\r\nThe newer (2016) ones do look better.\r\n

They\'ve done this on tons of their new bikes. My 2014 CB1100 had it and I reverted to 2013 left hand controls because it was so annoying -' + '- I don\'t know why they chose to make it different than basically every bike ever made.\r\n

So my wife is giving up riding, so I thought it\'d be a opportunity to trade in both our bikes and get a new bike. Life has been busy for me last few years, so I only get to take it out on weekends now. Was thinking of maybe downsizing to a 300cc-500c bike.. I know I only have a SV650, but it\'s still a night/day difference compared to the 250. Anybody else downgrade their bikes and have any regrets? Also, any recommendation for a sporty 300cc-500cc bike with a more neutral riding position? I like the Yamaha R3, but no-ABS is a dealbreaker for me. Or should I just go full out and get a Triumph Daytona 675, which was my original dream bike haha!
    \r\n \r\n
    \r\n
    \r\n
I think you\'re going about this the wrong way, you should upsize to a bigger bike.
\r\nSince your wife isn\'t riding anymore you can take her 2-up on it.
\r\nI\'ve ridden my girlfriend around a couple times on her CBR250 (that\'s been lowered), two of us in full gear probably had too much weight on it, but it still was fun. However not nearly as easy to do as on a larger bike.
\r\nI could get you a good deal on a 2009ZX10r...\r\n

\r\n The market has evolved away from small fast bikes. Now if it\'s under 600c in pretty well all cases it\'s a neutered learner bike.
    \r\n
\r\n30 years ago there were fast 400s and 250s, and there still are in some parts of the world. In North America thanks in no small part to the USA USA mentality those small fast bikes are extinct.
    \r\n
\r\nMy trip through motorcycle ownership has been peaks and valleys of size and performance. From a sportbike to a tourer to a dualsport to another sport bike and always in the past with plenty to choose from. And I"m sure many others have experienced this same route.
    \r\n
\r\nNow the trip is a straight road up the mountain with the only choices being bigger and bigger. Kind of a shame.
    \r\n
\r\nMaybe those new KTMs will shake it up.\r\n

That\'s a big endorsement. I don\'t regret downsizing from my old VTR 1000 to a 650 Versys at all. Not as much adrenalin fun happens, but it\'s a comfortable, capable and fun bike to ride all day long. You\'ve got me thinking an FZ07 would be a good next bike.\r\n

To be fair, ad doesn\'t say it was at a stand still; it says in a parking lot. There was clearly forward momentum, but the damage doesn\'t appear bad enough for that to have been at speed, so in a parking lot actually makes sense.\r\n

\r\n So I had the chance to ride 2 up today on a cbr500r... And it\'s no problem to haul two folks around at reasonable pace. It does lack in brakes for that given it has only one rotor and caliper up front. It\'s possible to pass cars on backroads but reality is, even at wfo throttle it needs time to build momentum. I\'d imagine a 300 with one rider would be comparable. A pass that a 600rr would be capable of in a second, takes thought, planning and space to do safely... And I would gear down and literally hold the throttle full stick.\r\n

\r\n Thanks guys, after some more consideration. I will sell the wife\'s 250 and keep the SV650 . I\'m pretty happy with my SV650, just thought it\'d be a nice opportunity to get a new bike. Oh well...unless I can convince my wife to let me keep the SV650 AND trade-in her 250 for a KTM RC 390 \r\n

\r\n If it hasn\'t been said already. The CBF, CBX, CBR500 are GREAT! I\'m currently riding an Yamaha R3 and loving it. The R3 would even be good for Squamish runs. Yamaha did an excellent job on the 320cc engine, it pulls far more than I thought it could.\r\n

\r\nI used to ride an SV650S. Bought a CBR250R ABS a month ago, but did not enjoy riding it on the upper levels, pinning it and getting blown around. Even though smaller bikes make better riders, to get to the twisty part of the road, it\'s nice to have the HP and torque.\r\n

Let me see if I can interpret B40\'s logic for you......
    \n
\nSmaller bikes are more forgivable than larger bikes
\nRiders may make the same mistakes on a smaller bike, but the consequences of those mistakes would be less noticeable, or not noticeable at all.
\nTo learn, a rider must makes mistakes, and the consequences of those mistakes must be noticeable.
\nIn order for a rider to truly learn, they must ultimately ride a 1000cc Supersport.\r\n

    \r\nWOW!!
    \r\n
\r\nI\'ve never tossed my leg over an sv650 ,but, that bike has a huge following and fan base. There must be a reason for that.
    \r\n.
    \r\n \r\n
    \r\n
    \r\n
i was not talking about the 650, yes it has a great following and apparently a great bike.. my statement was more towards the new 300cc class.
\r\ni say shite sometimes cause it looks good in print, obviously we dont go out there looking to get in trouble.. at least not so you can learn new tricks
\r\nin my experience playing it seemingly safe with much smaller bikes leads to false confidence... there are hundreds of riders who can claim thousands of miles of seat time
\r\nyear in and year out.. yet you ride with them in anything that is technically challenging n\' they fold, going straight & twisting the throttle teaches you very little and aint that difficult to do ..
    \r\n
\r\nthats all i mean, we see it on the forums all the time as well, folks with a scooter or any of several 300cc bikes for 2 seasons and suddenly they think they\'re ready to go mach II on a decked out R1 or BMW s1krr..
    \r\n
\r\ni wonder if they even seen a thing above 6500rpms on their current ride, commuting; where and how you learn your skills matters
\r\njust as much if not more so than how small the stupid bike is
    \r\n

    \r\n \r\n
    \r\n
    \r\n
what is noticeable to you, and may teach you something based on your skill level may not even register on me, its all very relative and specific to each rider
    \r\n
\r\nalso not entirely correct, but yes i do believe you can get away with certain stuff on smaller bikes because of their size and weight..
\r\nyou get an OH shit moment and swear to never do it again... which is where i believe smaller bikes are more forgivable... I
\r\nfvcked up on my 1st R6 going \'round a turn too damn fast and i had to draw upon years of (experience) riding dirt to save my arse.
\r\nIt would have been much tougher to come out the other end had I been riding an R1 and green as i was to street bikes..
    \r\n
\r\ni\'ve never been one to recommend a larger bike just so you can learn, in fact you can see from previous comments i\'ve advocated the exact opposite for years
    \r\n
\r\n On bigger bikes, small mistakes can turn into big fvck ups and some may not have acquired the necessary skills to pull out of \'em...
    \r\n
\r\n in those cases it is EASIER to learn and get to be a good/great biker if you move up slowly... BUT
    \r\n
\r\nassuming that every single bike out there, just because its tiny its automatically gonna teach you all you need to know?
\r\nuhmm... ever seen a 125cc blast down the tarmac for miles on end, throttle pinned n\' rider doing all he can to ride straight?
\r\noh yeah i\'m sure he\'s learning lots there... you\'ll never go fast enough to put you in a situation where you must acquire new skills
\r\nwhich would turn you into a better biker.. on a super tiny bike if you give it too much throttle its very likely all you have to do is squeeze
\r\nthe brakes and you\'re back; you\'re not about to see a crowd gather on the side of the street to praise your impressive riding skills when you
\r\ncome to a stop.. sweat pouring down your face, yeh right.
    \r\n
\r\nthe statement had been made just before my post, that you always just learn more from a smaller bike, and i think there is some limitations to that statement..
\r\nif you\'ve NEVER ridden a street bike, a 320cc may teach you lots about riding but its got absolutely nothing to do with being small..
\r\nit has more to do with the fact that its only got two wheels, its inherently unstable, and you\'ve never fvcking ridden one
    \r\n
\r\nof course, there are exceptions to the rule.. take it to the track n\' ditch the mirrors, i\'m certain a 320cc is plenty to get you into trouble n\' learn a few lessons

    \r\n \r\n
    \r\n
    \r\n
i can agree with this statement, but not everybody is really worried about loosing momentum when you\'re street riding,
    \r\n
\r\nyou\'re more worried about the drop on the other side of the concrete barrier

\r\nThis advice isn\'t for them; they\'re still out there winning the S2S every weekend. The small bike advice is for the other peeps.

If everybody rode your bike, and dressed just like you it would be a very boring motorcycle world.

\r\n you can also sell your smaller cc bike much easier than a larger cc bike. The biggest market of motorcycle buyers are 600ccs or less.\r\n

    Congratulations, Redhawk.
    \r\n
\r\nMy wife had a CB500X, earlier model with the 17" wheels. Excellent bike for a beginner, pretty fun for an experienced rider as well. Reliable, great gas mileage, enough power, and super low center of gravity. Enjoy!\r\n

\r\n Thanks. The bigger 19" front tire and improved suspension for the 2019 sealed the deal for me. \'Out the door\' price is under 10 grand which leaves me more spending money for accessories. I\'m looking forward to this riding season. Cheers.\r\n

Riders may make the same mistakes on a smaller bike, but the consequences of those mistakes would be less noticeable, or not noticeable at all.
To learn, a rider must makes mistakes, and the consequences of those mistakes must be noticeable.
In order for a rider to truly learn, they must ultimately ride a 1000cc Supersport.
you know what... i've re-read every line and I'd say i can agree with every point you make, on a sober mind... what tossed me is the limitation/ specific bike type... 1k cc supersport../?

uhhmm.... not always a number game for me but, the shit you do on a bike better scare you fvcking straight and quick whilst somewhat limiting the OHH Fvckk.. consequences agreed

actually Bandito above got it right!.. as he's got the definitions, correct partitions and slight differences in character down to a science
