My son and I are doing a complete teardown and rebuild of this beauty together. We're even going to attempt to lay on some new paint! I'm thinking of a traditional red / white theme.

By the time we're done, I'm sure he'll be big enough to ride 'er.

The best part of the whole experience is explaining to him how things work, and what the different parts are for. Here's a couple pics to wet your appitite. :D

As you can see, the seat pan needs to be reshaped, we have a significant rust problem, and I'm thinking a couple peices of 1x4's for the "foot pegs".

Tard it!:evilgrin

Cool project. How old is your Boy? I just had a small project with my 8yr old nephew. I coached him while he changed the Oil on my g/f`s EX500. The only thing I did was crack a few bolts that he couldnt move. It was very cool ...now the kid thinks he`s Jesse James.

Are you sure that thing won't have too much power for him, given that its his first bike? It looks like it must be the haybusa of tricycles!

Yes, lots of rust everywhere. I've taken a lot of it (and the paint) off with steel wool by now.

My boy is almost 15 months, and like most 15 month olds, keenly observes everything. Though most of his time on this project, is spent running around twisting both wrists while making motorcycle noises. I swear I have nothing to do with that. :devillook

I think the lessons will translate well as he gets older. I had no mechanical instruction growing up, and it showed. So in some ways we're both learning even though I've really moved beyond trikes at this point. When he's a bit older we'll tear down and rebuild two and four strokes together. Some real-world learning.

These old toys are built like tanks though! This trike has been through 6 kids already. Besides some paint and grease needed in the bearings, it's fully functional.

I got some body working hammers and dollys if you need them for that seat pan.... :D

And a couple of 2x4 blocks drilled so the axle tubes fit in across the grain would work well. SO when it's done the grain runs back to front. Paint 'em up with some non skid porch paint The sort with serious sand in the paint. Or sprinkle sand onto the first coat and then seal it down with a second coat. VOILA, instant peddles.

And don't forget his full face Arai.... :D

I love these "rags to riches" transformations, being a kid he may not appreciate building something from nothing right now but 30 years from now he'll look back with fond memories. Post pics when it's ready to roll. Hey, i haven't seen a trikie with a tricked out suspension yet haha

maybe when your sons a bit older you and him can build up a trike like this
