Anyone able to explain the premiss behind a 520-530 conversion on a chain and sprocket set change? I'm looking for some new stuff for my 954 and I'm not really too sure what would be best. I would like a good quality gold chain and black rear sprocket while dropping on tooth on the front compared to stock. Any advice on chains, sprockets, gearing or places to buy?

530 chain and sprockets are made with more material then a 520 so the 520 will save rotational weight. kinda like lighter rims. they generally put 530 chains on anything with more then 100hp because it was felt that all that torque and HP would break anything less robust but the technology on todays 520 chains is far superior to what it used to be. some will still argue that 530 is the only chain for big HP but whatever. chain brands are few and all seem to have the X-ring technology now so all are good. sprockets.....there are several manufacturers of sprockets but Vortex, Sunstar, and AFAM spring to mind as being good.

As for sprockets I would agree that AFAM are good but the others not so much especially Vortex. I would look towards Renthal and Spike sprockets. For chains, DID does the trick.

on a modern liter bike you might see 10k kms out of a 520 setup. doubt it though. i only got 10k out of a 530 setup with an alloy rear.

Welll...a NON o-Riing Chain is a whole bunch lighter.. feel the two side by side in yr hands and marvel at the difference. Cheaper too.
But you can buy a Decent brand of non o-ring for same pricings as a mediocre o- ring type. Sure it won't last as long, no arguements there.. that's part of the price of lightness, besides if Foolish enough to use Ali sprockets then durability is not yr major concern .. is it?
