As much as we joke about it being a stupid reason for having loud pipes. I rode a 999 last week that was much quieter than my S4R and cars seemed to me much less aware of my presence.

So maybe these numb nuts are on to something. I get cut off WAY less on my S4R than my old 600.

Something to think about ;)

Well When ever I'm driving i like hear the hummmm of a bike becase then i know there is some were in my "zone"
I find that quiet bikes some time slip past my radar becase my car has a noisy pipe and i have the tunes cranked up a bit..

and i feel on the other side of the coin when I'm on my bike i find that people dont relized I'm there, and a louder pipe would help that.

but then poeple go on about noise and and what have you, and how your just making noise to be "cool" (even thou if you ever met me you would relize I'm pretty lame.)

I would rather piss off some randoms with a little noise then be road kill.

I've had a lot less people try and be in the same place (at the same time) as me since i put on my Jardine RT-1. Plus it sounds so much better than stock (hell, you can HEAR it !!)

The only reason I went with an after market pipe was performance. I bought an Akropovic TI, and was amazed at much of a difference it made. Sure it sounds nicer, but the only thing keeping me safe on the road is me.

And as far as loud pipes go... I have enough things damaging my hearing as is. Kinda nice not to have to wear ear plugs everytime I go for a ride.

if you believe "loud pipes save lives"

then you all must be okay with cars that are running straight pipes (no baffling whatsoever)

think super ricer cars... deafeningly loud at WOT but fairly obnoxious at lower revs too.

Are you running it with or without the restrictor? Where did you get it from and how much did it set you back? Would you buy it again?
It was on my last BMW. It was a "touring model," and thus, had the restrictor. I did listen to an identical bike, with the "sport," model, which was considerably louder (too loud for my tastes) and not that much lighter.

John Valk BMW located it for me, and yes, it was reasonably priced. This was at least 6 years ago.
The K bike exhaust had a flaw, which caused it to crack where the individual header pipes met with the collector. In such a way that welcding it to repair was next to impossible. After 2 of those (first one $1100USD, the next one was priced at $1800CDN) I decided to go with the aftermarket, and I was delighted.
Decent tone without being obnoxious. A whole lot lighter, and robust enough I never had any issues with cracking, crazing and the finish on the product was superb.
Yup, I'd buy another one.

My Z came with pipes that created a noticable torque "hole" in the mid range. Got Muzzy slipons and the Power Commander to fill in the hole and create a smoother and stronger build of power through the mid range.

BUT.... TOO FREAKIN' LOUD FOR ME! ! ! ! It actually resonated at a couple of RPM's up into my helmet and had me almost in tears. Tore the cans apart and added a perforated cone baffle and repacked with more material (came very lightly packed). Now they are sporty without being annoying unless I stomp on it in the mid and upper RPMS. And the mid range is hellacious with the front end feeling light and airy all the time in the first two gears.

I put carbon slip on's the SS, because yes they look cool with all the other carbon bits that came with it.
Also they are about 20 pounds lighter which def. puts me right on 400 lbs. (wheels are next).
And theres no way in the world I'd ever put a muzzle on a Duc. That would fall under some cruelty to animals law I am sure.
And I know for a fact that people hear me and sense me in traffic.
I don't rely on the sound to be seen but its one more thing in my favor.

I think I'm an alert rider, and I use anything I have to my advantage to protect myself,

I love the sound of aftermarket pipes,

my rc51 pipes sound pretty mean when rev-ed,

they sound a lot better than my wimpy horn when somebody is about to cut me off.

Its like a loud dog growling and barking saying, "stay away from me!" Instead of.. beeeeeep*

the MAIN THING is, even though you have a aftermarket pipe, whatever loudness, you still gotta ride as if you are invisible.

Give "The Right of weight."
