Hi everyone,

I drive to work from Surrey to YVR and this traffic is killing me.
Is there an advantage traffic wise to ride instead?

I don't feel like there is, unless you ride like this:

But I can't picture myself doing this on Nordel Way in the morning.

Any thoughts?

i find riding the sm in traffic is the most fun ive ever had on a bike
not so much on the fjr though

you never win against traffic. It will always be there. There are times when you can scoot ahead, but, if you are on the road, you are in it. Riding a bike makes it a little more enjoyable. Just take the long way home.

bikes are a little bit more maneuverable through traffic than are cars, and they can use HOV lanes (for the better part) ...

Personally I don't do it. Someone cuts you off because he's angry you're getting ahead, or just isn't aware of you - enjoy dealing with ICBC

You can't filter or ride on the shoulder, but you can always be in the lane of traffic that is moving faster. changing lanes is a matter of moving back and forth one foot, and you don't even need a gap.

yeah, go ahead. Its the only way you will ever get anywhere on time. People here always watch out for motorcycles, especially ones filtering. I dont do it anymore because there is too many cars who dont give a shit about you and will always win in a metal on metal battle. Take you chances.

the only advantage to commuting on a bike is the smile on your face in the morning after getting to enjoy a ride before having to work. All seriousness, I'm just about 1 year into riding and my ride into work in the morning is more dangerous than in the car, not any faster due to traffic, but definitely more fun.

The reason to switch would be if you love bikes. If you're looking for an advantage, that's all I can think of.

Anyone can suggest bike friendly route from KG skytrain area to YVR?

There are three lanes on Nordel Way starting at pedestrian overpass westbound.
I can see bikes go to third lane and merge to middle lane at right turn to Alex Fraser bridge.
It took me about 10 min this morning to drive this section, so there is an opportunity to save 10 min by riding.
However, sometimes there are cops watching for cars in restricted lane, are they OK with bikers doing this?
Any experience?

In the RARE time I am riding through traffic I will filter through on the shoulder. Never between lanes. It's illegal and I fully expect a stack of tickets and feel very lucky if I do not get them. If you are commuting every day your odds for a stack of tickets are pretty high. Not to mention you are riding at one of the most dangerous times to be on a motorcycle. The small advantage of time is not worth the risk in my opinion.

If you're asking yourself whether to take the bike or the car to work... it's pretty obvious you're not really a motorcycle rider.

I get run off the road from my proper lane WAAAAY more often than when I'm filtering up at a light or 1st gearing up the shoulder when the freeway is stopped.

2 attempted murder charges could be laid just from this mornings commute. At least some kind of negligence.

First case Stevie Wonder decided to take over my left lane as I travelled past. I was thankful for the shoulder and the ability to keep my cool, drop a gear and scare the shit out of him as I went past. Saw the whole thing unfolding, so I got lucky that time.

Second case was coming off the freeway where there were 3 cars lined up to enter the freeway onramp. First one went way ahead of me. Second one started off, then stopped, then waited until I was 40 yards out and THEN decided to pull out. Again, went right around him.

I probably could have stopped, but would have had to really jam on the binders big-time. Was a better option to go around in both cases.
