So my wife is giving up riding, so I thought it'd be a opportunity to trade in both our bikes and get a new bike. Life has been busy for me last few years, so I only get to take it out on weekends now. Was thinking of maybe downsizing to a 300cc-500c bike.. I know I only have a SV650, but it's still a night/day difference compared to the 250. Anybody else downgrade their bikes and have any regrets? Also, any recommendation for a sporty 300cc-500cc bike with a more neutral riding position? I like the Yamaha R3, but no-ABS is a dealbreaker for me. Or should I just go full out and get a Triumph Daytona 675, which was my original dream bike haha!

What do you hope to achieve by downgrading? You're kind of all over the map here. You mention looking for a more neutral riding position, but then talking about getting a Daytona in the next breath, which are kind of a known torture rack, and also far from a downsize from your SV.

Honestly, if you like your SV and just want it to be slightly more neutral riding positing, swap your low clip-ons for heli-bars (or riser-bars of some variety) and call it a day. The SV is a great bike, and splits the difference between your mind-split of downsizing to a 300 vs upsizing to the daytona. You've already got the right bike for yourself, it sounds like.

Sorry if I was confusing. Just to be clear, I'm not getting a Daytona 675. That's the bike I wanted when I started riding, but given my needs now, it just doesn't make sense. I'm looking for a fun bike to take on short weekend rides with a more neutral riding position. Since my wife is giving up riding, thought it'd be a good chance for me to trade in my bikes for a new one. Figured for my needs, don't need a lot of HP, so might as well downsize and save some money. I had a lot of fun with the 250 when I was learning. I'm 5'7" 135lbs soaking wet. Doing some paper research, I'm leaning towards the Honda CBR500 ABS. But otherwise, you're right, I do like my SV, just thought it'd be nice to get a new bike :)

I am assuming your SV is S model and not N. If so, just trade your S for N and call it a day. Or hell, do a swap yourself. It takes very few parts to do the complete swap. N would give you that neutral riding position. I personally like N more, but then again I am biased :p

you wont save any money with a 500...

just get a set of helibars..


or... if you're hell bent on downsizing.. sell yours and keep the wifes... that way you'll actually save some money. again throw on helibars or risers w/e it has on it.

no point in buying a new bike if you're not exactly gung ho to go ride it.. imo at least.

Drop down to 500cc for the same insurance cost as your SV. Not much under 400cc except the little crotch rockets and the 390 Ktm. The Ktm could be what you are looking for. Lots of fun, good riding position, and cheap insurance.

Thanks for the thoughts guys, I've got some time to mull it over. I am happy with my SV, but always fun to have a new toy. I never use my SV to it's full potential anyways, so if I downsize, I think I will be fine. But the CBR500R is on the top of my list if I downsize (it looks a lot better than my SV, especially the 2016 with the LED headlights) :)

Look at SV-Racing for parts, the risers are 2-1/2 or 3-1/2 rise and the peg locator plates change the foot position 1 inch back and anywhere 1 inch down to 1 inch up. Really changes the feel of the bike.

First of all, I wouldn't trade in your bikes - I would sell them privately. Trading in is a hose job.

Second of all, the Honda CBR500R is a nice bike... I've ridden one on a few occasions and found the riding position very neutral. That said, the power is pretty low, even compared to your
650sv.

But, it's a great choice for a bike if your wife wants to maybe go pillion. I wouldn't go 300 personally, they are very low on power and feel quite small in my opinion. And while you can 2 up on them, I wouldn't do it for any major distance. The 500 will haul two people around all day long and it's no worries.

That's horseshit. A 300 - 400cc bike will have no problems on the road, and will do just fine on tighter layout track days.

I went down in size a couple times. From a big 1000cc BMW sport touring K100RS down to a Honda V4 400 to a Ninja 250.

Family financial pressure and all, and only able to afford having one bike in the house. A couple points:

A smaller bike makes you a sharper rider. You can't rely on horsepower to make up for your inability to corner. If you want to keep up you have to learn how to ride better.

Lighter bikes are easier to flick around, if you spend some extra money to make sure the suspension is suited to your weight and riding style.

Not that much change in fuel economy, but the insurance will certainly be less.

The engines are more highly stressed and won't last as long as a bigger bike. Don't plan on keeping the engine going past 60,000km on a single or 100,000 km on a twin, it'll be completely worn out by then.

It won't have a lot of get up and go with a passenger, but you'll only be down to standard car speeds and acceleration. Not the end of the world.

I had no issues taking the 250 up to Yellowknife, down to San Francisco, over to Yellowstone, and all over the PNW, with soft bags and a huge Givi Maxia tail trunk. Would happily run at 140km/hr for hours at a time..


It's probably more important to make sure you like the bike. I was happy to have the 250 at the time. I could afford to run it, it met my needs, and I wasn't one of those poor bastards who gave up riding altogether blaming their wife and kids. It was the right bike for the time and I really enjoyed it for what it was.

ha! maybe if you weigh 400 lbs

300s perform satisfactory as 1 up touring bikes I would say, climbing the canyons up to lillooet I had my r3 WFOT probably 75% of the time and topping out at 180 km/hr, they make fun track bikes doe!

I'd cringe at the idea of having to pass 3 or 4 consecutive rv's over a broken yellow somewhere... that could be sketchy.
