I'm riding home and going down 16th ave in Burnaby when I come to the school zone there. I slow to 30kph. The lady behind me felt that 30 was waaay to slow for her and she starts getting antsy. I see her twitching, swearing to herself and swerving her mini van side to side.
I've been passed before while in a 30 zone on the right and seen this coming. I think last time someone passed me on the right they were probably confused with my lane position and thought I would be turning left. But this lady was just plain impatient.
As she passes me to my right, I'm just smirking in my helmet thinking "this is gonna be good". I know my neighborhood really well. Better then her it would seem.
She passes me on the right, gets in front of me and there are about 15 to 20 cops standing right there on the side of the road with a radar gun.
The J.I. is just a few blocks away and all the recruits walk up to 16th and set up radar across from Cariboo Secondary every day for the last week or so.
Cop jumps out in front of lil miss impatient and pulls her to the side of the road. I give a thumbs up as I ride by.

It was the feel good moment of the day :)

hah sweet, they were nabbing idiots taking hov lane on arthur lang bridge today, that rocked. I hate it when single drivers feel privilaged enough to take that lane!

Gotta love it when idiot drivers get nailed for shite like that. It pisses me off when people behind me get impatient as I'm doing the limit in a school zone. One of my rules is to respect the speed around schools, even if I don't do that anywhere else!

u'd think a woman in a mini van (which is a soccer moms refugre or an SUV) would abide by riding through a school zone!!! good for u for giving her the thumbs up!

school zones suck, they only preserve dumb kids. I can see it if kids are around, but all day long when kids are in class is BS! People should teach their kids street smarts.

I'd have been tempted to squeak by too, would have been on the left though!

Also, you'll find those JI classes are just for instruction, verbal warnings only for speeding. Unless you really asshat it. Did they see the pass on right? That may have earned a hold for her until the regular cops arrived.

That's awesome! This morning, I had an encounter similar to that, however, the woman in the minivan just keep going up the right side of me until she pushed me over the line in the other lane! I was pissed! A quick tap on the fender with my foot got her to slow down and get behind me. You'd think my horn, pathetic as it is, would have been enough to alert her that she cannot share my lane. I'm just glad one of these bloody drive-your-kid-to-school moms got what she deserved! The one this morning certainly gave me road rage that I had to keep in check.

Really? Holy crap. I've lived at the corner of Gaglardi and Lougheed for 6 years now, and drive that stretch in front of the school at least once a week heading out to Delta. In all that time I have *never* seen a cop between Cumberland and Cariboo.

And i've given up doing 30km/h on that stretch, because I decided it was safer to do 50km/h and annoy the people behind me (because I wasn't doing 60, 70, or 80) instead of doing 30km/h and getting my ass raped by every soccer mom in an oversized SUV driving down that road. I've had *bikes* pass me on the right on that road while I did 30. I've never seen more than two or three kids on that stretch either. Maybe I just drive it when school is in, or too late to find any after school is out.

I ride through that road for my commute home almost everyday the past 3 yrs, and have not seen a cop yet. But then again, it's usually after 5pm, so school's out by that time... Maybe that's why... nevermind, carry on...
Keep an eye out for them between noon and 3 there. They also like to hang out inbetween 8th and 10th on Cumberland.

I am having the same 'struggle' with 24th Ave Westbound into South Surrey. For about 2 Kms they have a Construction 30KM/h (and "Fines Doubled in Constructin Zone" sign) but there is often no construction vehicles, nor flaggers in sight. The sightlines are huge and the road is wide. I want to do 30 but the other vehicles still want to do 70 to 80 (in an otherwise 60 zone).
It's like the 30 Km/h sign doesn't even exist for these people. In the 20 or 30 times I've come across there, not once did any vehicle in front of me actually slow - at all - from their approach speed (usually 70 km/h).

In my SUV, I will slow to 30 and screw 'em behind me if they don't like me obeying the law. On my bike however, when I feel that "push" OR impatience behind me, I will pull to the side and rejoin traffic at the end of the line. It's not worth getting hit or run off the road for and it only sets me back a few seconds.
From my perspective there's a pretty freakin huge difference between a school zone and a vacant construction zone. I live around 24th and I hope I never get stuck behind you :)

i like doing 60 down Columbia where it joins onto Brunette at 4am in the morn and getting those guys coming home from their mistresses houses that need to do 90 and then it turns into 1 lane for a spell then back into 2 where the old brewery used to be then i pull into the inside lane and speed up to 70 for a couple blocks just to make the impatient guy or gal behind do a real fast fly by so the officer stationed across from the bailif's yard can hit the lights and wail out and pull em over. done it a few times. i just giggle!!

I just wish more ppl would realize that school zones don't apply 24 hours a day.

I've lost count of the number of times i've yelled at the person in front of me "MMMMMMNNNNPH MMMNNPH MMMMMNNNPPPH!". At least that's what they heard through my helmet. What I was saying is "It's a School Zone, not a Playground Zone, dipwad!"

I honked at a lady once who was doing 30 in a school zone on a Saturday. She got out of her car at the next light and came back to tell me that she was driving the limit for a school zone, and why was I honking? I asked her what school was in session on Saturday? Her face went red and she walked back to her car in silence.
